Like so many other families, my husband and I are relocating to the Dallas area. We are willing to commute and will be working in Plano. Plano looks nice but it is a big community and we are coming from a small town. Is Little Elm a nice place to live for a family with school age children? It looks like you get a little more bang for your buck there, and Cypress Elementary School looks very good? It has experienced tons of growth over the last 10 years but still seems small. We will rent a home for a year before deciding where to buy. Allen is another contender? My husband will be in Dallas scouting next week and any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I would pick Allen over Little Elm. Allen schools are better, infrastructure is better, city services are better, access to a freeway is better, availability of retail is better.

There is a section of Little Elm that feeds into Frisco ISD, which might be a possibility though.

My son is buying a home in Little Elm in the Frisco ISD. They are happy w/the area and said there is a lot of shopping nearby. I don't like cookie-cutter subdivisions but I will end up in one to be near the grandkids. Landon is the builder and Robertson (?) is the elem school. David Weekley is also buuilding nearby but I'm not sure of the ISD.

I also would choose Allen anyday over Little Elm. There is basically one way in and out of Little Elm to get to anywhere, and it's a mess. It can take you 10 minutes to go 1 mile. Allen has a far superior infrastructure with many ways in and out of any part of the area.

Thank you everyone that really helps. I guess that entire area above Dallas has experienced so much growth that the infrastructure has to catch up! Allen seems really nice and it looks like we will have to give that some serious looking at! Thanks again to all who replied, your comments are very helpful!

While 423 South out of Little Elm is a mess, Eldorado Parkway is 6 lanes from FM423 to the Dallas North Tollway. Traffic east out of Little Elm is a breeze now. North/South from The Colony is a vastly different story, though.

bluescreen 73, you say the colony is a different story...Good or Bad? My husband is looking to take a job there. We are south of Stephenville right now, itty bitty town. Do tell about The Colony paleeze!

We moved to THe Colony about 18 months ago and have been pretty happy with it for the following reasons:

Very easy to get onto the 121
Close to new shopping, Frisco, Plano dining and amenities
Small town feel (sort of)
We do a charter school which is located here
Affordable properties
Stay clear of the middle section basically ones with front garages

Stewart Penninsula is nice but nearly impossible to get in/out of during commute times.

The Colony itself isn't that bad. There are some older parts of town that I wouldn't want to live in, but there are also plenty of newer developments closer to Highway 121.

My point really wasn't about The Colony itself, but rather traffic between Little Elm and The Colony. It's terrible. FM423 is a divided four-lane highway through The Colony but it funnels down to three lanes (2 Southbound, 1 Northbound) undivided just outside of town.

It's a massive traffic bottleneck that is solid cars for 5-6 miles between Eldorado Parkway in Little Elm and North Colony Drive in The Colony during evening rush hour. Spending 20-40 minutes trying to get from The Colony to Little Elm during evening rush hour is not uncommon.

Thankfully, FM423 is being widened from Stewarts Creek Road all the way to US380, but because of construction that traffic nightmare is going to get worse before it gets better. You can expect an additional 2-3 years of traffic delays along 423.
