Hi,

I'm looking for an area around Dallas that is similar to Gurnee, IL while still being easily accessible to downtown Dallas and close lakes and parks. We're looking to spend under $800 a month in rent for a two bedroom apt.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

we have friends who moved from Chicago==Buffalo Grove area to Bedford--not Dallas but west of DFW--years ago
finding an apt at that price in nice area is not going to be easy IMO whether it is similar to your IL town or not

Well from what I remember Gurnee is about 40 minutes from Chicago via car. The place in Dallas that most resembles what you're looking for in your post is Rockwall. It's about 30-40 minutes from downtown Dallas and is situated on Lake Ray Hubbard. I'm not sure what the apartment price range is there though.

As an aside, if you're expecting downtown Dallas to be anything like downtown Chicago you're likely to be sorely disappointed. Downtown Dallas isn't nearly as vibrant as Chicago mostly due to population differences (many more people live in downtown Chi vs. downtown Dallas). Just wanted to make sure you're aware of that. But on the plus side the tax difference between the two locations might just make up for that!

Gurneee, IL is much like the Gurness Mills Mall approach. Safe, family friendly exurban areas. Just search for the neares Mills Mall and you have what you are looking for. That would be Grapevine, TX and Grapevine Mills, lol. But really, all of the exurban areas would be fine. Rockwall, McKinney, Denton, Frisco, Flower Mound, etc.

Sorry no apartments in Rockwall. Rowlett next to it has some but very few too.

We too moved from Chicago (Schaumburg/Barrington areas) and that was 15 years ago, I remember going to Gurnee but don't remember what it's like, I don't think I can help with comparison.

Do you mean no apartments for what the OP is willing to pay? I know there are two apartment complexes on Yellow Jacket and another on Goliad. I think I've seen a few others driving through there as well.

You're absolutely right, I always always forget about those by Yellow Jacket. They're not cheap either, I think about $950 for a year lease for a 600sf 1 bedroom. Then there is a brand new complex off 276 called the Mansions of Rockwall a mixture of townhomes and apartments.
