some public ISDs do better job than others with their special needs students and frankly the ones that do poorly are difficult to get accurate info about
so many parents expect miracles and they are looking at the wrong agency for that...

but run search for dyslexia on the Dallas board and you will get posts...
Tarrant/FTW board is usually the one for questions about Southlake/Colleyville areas

this may be a controversial comment, but while I agree that the DFW suburbs are "Anytown USA", in my opinion (no offense inteneded), so is the entire Dallas area, including the close-in city areas. While North Dallas/Preston Hollow/Park Cities/Lakewood/Etc. all have their charms, you could be in any nice close-in area in any big city. Nothing particularly unique in either case. Doesnt mean that they arent nice areas in both regards. It just means that I am not sure you could telll the difference between Dallas close-in neighborhoods and St.Louis, Houston, wherever close-in neighborhoods. THis is definitely true of the suburbs... they could be anywhere. As a contrast, if you are downtown Austin, you know it. If you are in Austin suburbs, you know it. Just to give another Texas contrasting example...

In addition to Lakewood in the same general area, the Greenland Hills subdivision known to Dallas natives as the M street area is worth checking out. The houses West of Greenville, South of Mockingbird, and North of more or less Vanderbilt are in one of the strongest historical districts in Dallas. I can tell you this with confidence because we brought one of these homes back to it's former glory. It was a tremendous experience. I know what you mean about the McMansions, but even these had to be built under very strict guidelines to keep the homes consistent looking and serve a purpose in the overall makeup of the neighborhood. Many people refer to this area as the "Gingerbread House" neighborhood because of it's charm and mold from the English Tudor style that so many people love.

Also, I'm guessing you've already driven through this particular area, but Linwood Place, or even a few homes in Idlewild Acres would fit your budget. These areas are located around Inwood just West of the Dallas N. Tollway very close to Love field. This is also a very beautiful and historic area of Dallas. All of these areas in this thread have shown great stability in price as well through the economic downturn.

Good luck, I'm sure any move like this is tough on the kids! In general, Dallas is a friendly place and I hope that they make friends quickly.

FarNorthDallas,
Thank you so much for the private school info for Dyslexia. I hope we won't have to go that route but it is good to know its there. Our daughter is only mildly-moderately affected, in regular classrooms and works very hard. As the move becomes more definate I will definately be researching more.

Default Midway Hollow

Please cruise the little neighborhoods tucked in and about south of Walnut Hill Lane to Northwest Hghwy to Lemmon Ave-----off of Midway.
Midway Hollow is the charming 1950's neighborhhood I am thrilled to have lucked into 15 years ago when it was very affordable. A google will reveal it to consistently named one of the more desirable neighborhhood in Dallas. You'll see a fair number of lovely [yes lovely] brick and stone McMansions coming in, in the 600-800 price range, wonderfully done, with stately trees saved, respectfull of the style and charm of the surrounding brick/stone original 3 bd/2 bath homes selling now about 300k.

I dont have kids and dont think about schools but there are several gated fancy ones I drive past in my daily errands. Private I imagine.

Very active neighborhood watch with one of the cities first crime watch groups. Private patrol.

At 3-5 miles from Love Field!!!!! theres is no commute. Shoot, ride your bike.

Feel free to contact me off list for particulars.

We are moving from the historic northeast and having a difficult time finding homes with that feel. Safety and Excellant schools are a must. Home prices up to $600,000. Commute times are very important. What about Southlake, Colleyville? Thank you everyone.
You know I have to side with the Dallas folks on this. Lakewood would be a great neighborhood for you, just set aside some money for private schools and you'll be in great shape. Btw, Turtle Creek is right about Mckinney schools as compared to Collin County but they are better than DISD by a mile. However, your husband would be miserable trying to commute from Tucker Hill everyday, I live in Frisco and that seems far out. As a matter of fact it's almost 25 minutes from south Frisco to Tucker Hill and you would have to come down 121 through Frisco to get to Love field. Even on the best day it would take him 45 minutes to get to work, I hate to think about the worst traffic days.

Lakewood/M streets are wonderful communities, they have great schools up until high school. Don't let anyone fool you, Woodrow Wilson has been rated unacceptable for a couple of years, I would go private school if I lived down there for high school. They have raised the academic rating to acceptable now and they do have a new IB program.

Midway Hollow is about 3 blocks from Love...not 3-5 miles.
