Hey everyone..I just joined today so excuse me if I am ignorant of where I should be!!!! My husband and I are retiring..yeah, finally....in April and we are looking to rent a small home ina small town in Eastern Texas. We would like to be close to a lake for him to fish. We want to rent til we know the area and then will buy...but how do we start looking??? and where?? We went last weekend to Gun Barrel City to look at a house there that was horrid!!!! I mean just awful!!!!...but we did like the area...any suggestions or realtors would be such a help to me..I am getting discouraged by what we have found so far..there has to be a lil town like Mayberry somewhere over there!!! LOL we are in Benbrook now , and love it but its too expensive for retiring....any help would be so appreciated..thanks so much!! walkinez

first of all--there are so many different levels of quality in the Gun Barrel city area--some of the homes for sale are basically fishing shacks and some in other neighborhoods are pretty basic weekend homes and some are pretty nice developments--

look at lakehouse.com and you can find a gamut of price ranges/quality of homes and rentals as well as for sale

why do you think Benbrook is so expensive???
taxes on lake property is rated by the lake footage you own--the wider the lot to the lake the higher the valuation usually
so you would be better off getting a home off the water but close to the lake if you want to fish

Check out Hopkins and Delta County around Cooper Lake. There are a lot of nice areas there and Cooper Lake is suppose to have some real killer fishing in it. It is also close to Sulphur Springs, TX which has quite a bit to offer.

Good luck!

I looked around Gun Barrel City too, and yes, saw a wide range of homes. I did find a nice real estate office there, since you asked -- they were really helpful and went above and beyond and were very nice. I dealt with realtors all over East Texas .... found another nice one near Logansport but I don't know if you want to go that far east.

I am just moving myself, and don't know much about the towns. I did find there were a lot more chicken houses (large chicken ranches with a bit of an odor) as well as a lot more oil activity further east, which I found a bit objectionable.

The lake near Gun Barrel city is supposed to be good for fishing, but there are lakes all over East Texas. Good luck!

You might try Athens. Lake Athens is a nice clear lake with good bass fishing. It is also home of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. People are nice and friendly, but the politicians are among the most crooked people in the state. Especially those who run the Athens Lake Authority; they are there just to do favors and help their buddies make money. If you can avoid politics and any dealings with them, it's a great town. And close enough to Cedar Creek Lake (Gun Barrel City) and Tyler, too.

My husbands grandparents lived in a really great community near G-B-City till sadly their house burnt down. It is called Spanish Shores. We used to spend Sunday afternoons on the lake after church... tons of fun! We actually got married in the Beacon Church of Christ there in G-B-City and were long time members of that church until we found one a little closer to home. Good Luck on your search and Happy Retirement to you both!

There are so many homes around Cedar Creek lake you surely should be able to find something to your liking. I know many folks who have retired in that area. If your husband likes Crappie fishing he can fish the 100's of docks there and feel the cooler.
