Besides the yellow I like the traffic signals that flash on the don't walk and count down how many seconds before light changes. We have one at Lovers and Abrams.

I like those too. If I am bicycling to one of those intersections, it lets me know whether or not I have enough time to make the light by ramping up the speed, which takes a lot of extra effort, to make make light. If there is no way I can make it, might as well not over exert myself just to stop at the red.

Worked out very well, even infront of local police with my out-of-state tags clearly visable. I haven't come across any states that enforce it. It has been the prescribed practice where I have driven. But since this is in the context of a Dallas, thread, I'll keep it there and stick to the Texas handbook, and we've already gone around that tree. Thanks for playing, and welcome back.
Oregon now allows entering the intersection and waiting in it on a flashing yellow arrow, but not on a circular green. The latter is prohibited because of the possibility yellow trap.

Again, welcome back. Let's see, it's 2013 now, the law hasn't changed here. It is still the prescribed practice to move into the intersection on the green ball.

I adopted a practice employed by UPS - the shipping company - just plan your routes with as few left turns as possible. I'll overshoot one freeway exit if it saves sitting in a left turn lane, say going northbound on 75 exiting Arapaho so I can turn right (south) on Greenville instead of exiting Belt Line Road to turn north on Greenville. More mileage and fuel from a distance perspective, but then there's much less idling time sitting to make a left turn. Of course the trade off is if your destination - going southbound on Greenville - does it require a right or left turn to a side street or business, so you have to plan accordingly.

Arguably, one might conclude a left turn just off a major freeway artery is far more time consuming (onto greenville) and dangerous than a left turn lane off Greenville to a side street.

J Edgar Hoover developed the strategy. Just remember 3 right turns equal a left. I don't take left turns on unprotected streets. In 1995 I was hit by a maniac cause I hesitated for a speeding car and that is one thing that will not happen to me again.
