do you dress him in shirts that say Obama? How in the world do his classmates in an elementary school know who his parents voted for?

Bumper sticker.
(We dress him in a hemp toga and granola hair weave.) Sorry, couldn't resist.
;-)

Thanks for the many responses! We're still on the hunt, a bit more optimistic after reading the thread.

I'm actually wearing hemp socks right now. I got them from a train vendor in Asia several years ago. I was too lazy to read the writing until after I got back to the USA. Had I read the package I probably wouldn't have bought it, but I just felt the socks and they were comfortable and cheap (well, cheap for somebody used to US prices).

On a side note, get rid of the bumper sticker if you don't want your kid to be singled out.

Not sure you'll find what you are looking for in that area of Dallas either. At your price point in those areas you will probably deal with a lot more crime and noise than you do in Richardson, and I doubt the schools in the Lake Highlands feeder pattern are any better than those in the J.J. Pearce feeder pattern. If you're in PISD in northwest Richardson, I can see why you're annoyed with the schools. Those do not have the best rep. The houses in Canyon Creek in PISD are cheaper for a reason.

As for DISD...there are some bright spots elementary school-wise, but those zones are small and a lot of the RE will be out of your price range. Some people talk up Woodrow Wilson High School, but despite its IB offerings and reputation, it is very much an inner-city school with inner-city problems. A lot of parents in the Lakewood area go private after elementary school, and there are reasons for that too. Just be wary and do not let your desire for "liberal, academic" neighbors cloud your better judgment.
