My husband and I are in our mid 20's and we just moved to the Dallas area from Europe. We are overwhelmed by the size of the area and need some advice on where to live. My husband will be working in the mid-Cities area. We want an area that is not completely suburban. We would like to be able to walk to some shops and restaurants and we would like to live in a place where there are at least some people around our ages. We will not be having kids anytime soon so schools are not an issue. We are looking to spend $1000 a month (without utilities) on a 1-bedroom apartment. We would appreciate any advice! Thanks!

May I ask where youre coming from in Europe? Im just curious since I travel there 6-8 times a year.

I would recomend Uptown or the Knox-Henderson area. They seem like they would fit the bill the best in Dallas.

But if you are going to be working in the mid-cities, check out downtown Fort Worth. It would be perfect for you.

Uptown Dallas is what most people will say regarding anyone in their 20s.

What inner city is he working in? That may determine the commutee/where to live. Downtown Fort Worth is nice but Uptown Dallas would be better for the whole walking to shops/restaurants/bars etc... IMO

May have to do some searching but 1 bedroom apartments can be found for ~$1,000 in the area

think you might enjoy the FTW side--going from Sundance Sq area to mid-cities would not be that bad a commute
but there is no public transportation that would get you from downtown area of dallas or FTW into the Mid-Cities because the TRE is either in Richland Hills--west of Hurst--or it is south by Bell helicopter plant...

Look at either downtown Fort Worth or Las Colinas. These areas have the walkable shops and restaurants, and there will also be lots of other folks your age. Your price range shouldn't be a problem.

Uptown Dallas would be a LONG commute to the Mid-Cities. If you want your husband spending up to an hour each way in traffic (and therefore cutting into your evenings together), then go for it. As others have siad, there is no public transportation that can get him there.

Thanks for all the help so far and to answer some of the questions... My husband is working in Hurst so I think that living in Uptown would be too much of a commute. We've been living in Madrid but are excited to be moving to the area. I'll start looking into some of your suggestions. thanks!

If your husband is working in Hurst, you guys really should check out downtown Fort Worth.

If youve been living in Madrid, the Spanish will serve you well.

Southlake off mainstreet; you can walk to the shopping square. Las Colinas has a lot of very young folks and is only about 8 miles from Hurst. You can walk on the Campion Trail. Also apartments around Thomas Jefferson Park in Las Colinas, you can walk to some shops... albeit suburban-type.
