I moved to Dallas area on March last year . I'm in th IT field, I was unable to get a job for almost 3 months living on savings, I got a crappy 14 bucks an hour job for about 5 months before getting my current job (with a great salary)... so is no easy. Get some backup money.

I will be relocating in July and would like to have a start date in early August. How early is too early to apply and how late is to late to apply, since I will not arrive in DFW until July. I have a family so I must have a position secured before I arrive. I really appreciate your opinion.

Thanks,

I've seen $3000 employee referral bonus ads on the cafeteria tables in BUMC. (Baylor University Med Ctr Dallas). Look at Baylor and TexasHealth's website. I'm sure you'll be able to find work.

Hello Ms RN from Florida RN,
Experiencing some of the same kinds of research. However, I see that you have received some excellent suggestions from all;esp Christie P and IndianaDad. However, do remember the traveling agencies may also be worth a consideration. Housing would be compensated, you would really have a chance to get your feet in the door, and you may be able to get a short term assignment just to get your Texas bearings. They have more for your specialty than mine (psy and case managment). Hope this info is not too late, all the best.

I realize I'll have to wait tables, etc when I arrive in Dallas until I find a permanent job, but as far as a career in Dallas, I feel I have three choices (and I'm wondering which you think offers the most job opportunities in Dallas):

1) Operations & New Business Management -
My degree in graphic design landed me a job where, despite the recession, I currently do fairly well in Ops. & New Bus. for a digital marketing firm (meaning, we build websites, iPhone apps, etc). From what I've read, I have a feeling finding a similar job in Dallas would be tough (although, I'm not set on staying in this field, so I'm not heartbroken about that either).

2) Medical Field -
From this tread I see the Dallas medical field is doing well. I have a very strong passion for the medical field (and since I was a teen, everyone has told me this is the field I was meant to be in), but I only have a few nursing classes under my belt. I began a nursing degree last year but stopped since I feared I was too old to *completely* switch careers in my mid-30s.

3) Accounting / Finance
Although I did not complete my accounting degree, I have college background in accounting (and have considered completing a 2nd degree in accounting / finance). While my passion is with the medical field, I like accounting & finance, I'm great at it, it would be easier on my bad knees than nursing, and it wouldn't be as far as a stretch from what I do now (some classes and certificates, etc and that could be a more realistic transition from what I do now).

But what I'm wondering is... which of these fields makes the most sense in a Dallas job market?

Thumbs up Hello, just a word of continued encouragement

Hi, Please be encouraged. Whatever decision that you make, and the forces behind the decision will certainly require that you design a plan to accomplish those. Considering the domino changes happening in our culture, health care is a good choice I agree, although the industry itself is undergoing turmoil. I suspect that the turmoil will be temporal. People will always be sick unfortunately...if you LOVE nursing, you just won't be right until you give it a chance which can be a long road...another poster had suggested to an OP in similar cirumstances, to also consider some of the ancillary fields.....Ultrasound tech, MRI tech....try to do a thorough search from the US DEPT OF LABOR and its predictions...Lastly, I was 42 years old when I graduated from ADN Nursing school and continued to go on to achieve a Bachelor and in four courses will complete my master's. In our country, nothing is impossible...all the best.

You make great points. Thanks! I suppose it's not so much of determining which is needed more in Dallas, but rather which is best for me.
