Hi all

I have read somewhere on this forum that post by "krazymack"

"State schools in Texas have the policy, if you are an out-of-state student and get a scholarship, you automatically get charged for the in-state tuition"

Has anyone gotten that at UTD,
What are my chances I have GPA of 3.5

Thank you for all your help

all kinds of factors go into who wins scholarship
frankly 3.5 is not that great -- there are probably scholarship apps that have closer to 4.0 or even if they are AP/honors students they could have above a 4.0
other factors like community service, family circumstances, major field of study play into who is chosen for scholarships

have you checked out UTD site itself to see if it is one of the schools that does that
my son told me that grad schools will often do that because there are often more out-of-state vs in state winners and if they reduce it to state tuition levels they don't have to raise their handout amounts to compensate...

3.5 is the minimum for certain merit based scholarships at UTD. (That info is available online, by the way). And they have other ones just for 4.0s.

I don't know if it's that easy to be charged in-state. Just to apply the university requires proof of TX residency, etc. If that info is not online, it's a phone call away.

When I went to my orientation at UTD and spoke with the dean about scholarships..

They asked me more or less about class rank (more important if you are from Texas),

next thing they asked me was ACT/SAT scores.

I found in my college search, ACT/SAT scores were way up on the list of what they were looking for in scholarship recipients.

Arrow UTD response

Thank you stargirl007 for your detailed response.

I would be a transfer(junior) student. May I ask you what were you studying at UTD? Why did you transfer? Any comments on teachers

My first choice was UT @ Austin( they will not accept me I have TOO many credits

Actually I plan to move to Texas in the summer 2010(orginally from NY sick of snow), establish my residency one year, attend UTD for undergraduate in BS Accounting. Take GMAT

Then apply to MPA program at UT Austin @ Texas to become a cpa.

Can you/someone you know( a serious student) who would rank UTD'Accounting studies

I am not familiar with the area/ TX and different forums seen to suggest UTD has a pretty good ranking, and is also part of the same network as UT @ Texas.

P.S I am bit non traditional student, bit older , so no much into parties etc, but would like to make few friends, never had any. but would like a school where there are reasonably good networking, jobs, good quality repuation etc

Any advice would be helpful

Thanks once again

If you dont mind, me asking: you mentioned you still live in the area. If I eventually move there would you be able to show me around, finance is not the reason, that you wont have to do.

When one moves to a new place, everything is totally different, just a moral support MAY BE. totally up to you. No hard feelings. Are you still a student/working etc

If you are a nontraditional student, I would say UTD is a decent choice. I had several nontraditional students even in my core curriculum courses at UTD.

UTD is not known for their undergraduate business studies. Most of what they are known for is their engineering division.

I was originally a Computer Science major, I transferred to SMU to pursue a business/advertising degrees. A big reason why I transferred from UTD was the overall student population, and I don't think that would really have much to do with what you are wanting to do. I thought the academics there were challenging, I learned a lot. But, UTD just cannot foster the social environment that another school can. It is a big commuter school, and I wanted to be at a more residential type school, I feel like it's easier to meet people and get involved that way.

I remember my Accounting professor last summer talking about the UTD program, they are mostly known for coming out with some REALLY strong scores on the CPA exam. He was telling us that like 1 or 2 of the top 5 CPA scores last year came out of the UTD program. I think the Accounting program there is promising, but still growing. I would say that could easily even be a backup option for you if you were willing to stay in the Dallas area for the MBA program.

This may seem a bit biased, but I feel like SMU has an overall better developed business program. If you are looking for those networking opportunities, SMU has them. What they do not have is a larger nontraditional student population - but that may be because of where it is located more than anything. SMU also has a wellrespected MBA program. My time at SMU has been in the business program, and they have many more resources than I ever saw at my year at UTD. SMU also has that additional price tag on it, which may be why they have more of those resources.

UTD's MBA program was just ranked in the top 50 in the nation which is pretty impressive for a young school.
