Hi

I am looking for good community colleges in the Plano area. I know in some states, colleges claim to be community colleges but really aren't. I do not know the Texas side of things, so am looking to know what colleges are out there that are accredited and also have some articulation agreements with the Universitys for transfers etc.

I am currently working towards an AA in Crim Justice but when I move to Texas this would need to be transferred. I would need to talk to them now to ensure that my work I am doing in CA will be transferable.

Any assistance would be great. Any views on the colleges would also be good.

Thanks

DCCCD has agreements with several universities. You can call the universities you are interested in and check.

Good luck.

CCCCD (Collin College) has agreements with several universities as well, including UT-Dallas, UT-Arlington and UNT... I think Baylor, A&M and Tech have transfer programs as well, but I am not 100% sure on those.

Avoid Brookhaven College. I won't go into details but even if you have a degree from another school out of state, they still expect you to take come reading/writing and math competency test in order to enroll. Also, the admissions department are some of the least helpful and hard to deal with people I've ever encountered. Don't expect a phone call back from anyone there either. Ok, end rant... Going to Collin next semester. They've been alright so far with admissions.

could that be because there are people who come from other "colleges" who still lack proficiency in those areas???
if you have compentency, why worry about a test showing it...
There is also Tarrant County Community College--it has several campuses that offer AA in criminal justice and has a reciprocal arrangement with UT-Arlington and maybe UNT in Denton and other area universities...

That's funny! One of my good friends is transferring from Brookhaven to Collin as well. Something must be up with that place.

I was told that the tests are to determine if the applicant is ready for college level courses in those and related subjects. Common sense tells me that if someone has a college degree, they are more than competent to take more college classes. That is the issue here. Sure, I took a reading/writing and math competency test for college... 10 years ago right out of high school! I think these "assessments" as they call them are more designed for first time college students.

If you have transcripts and/or a degree from an accredited school, the very basic courses should at least transfer over in some way. I can certainly understand higher level courses not transferring over.

My main gripe with all of this is the way the staff at Brookhaven handled the situation.

As far as I know you need the accuplacer (the reading/writing and math test) for all DCCCD campus, not only Brookhaven.

Now, I have a friend taking some pre reqs for PT school with a previous degree from OK and she didn't have to take the test.

For ABbaby -

Transferring credits from higher education courses is
regulated by the state in the Texas Administrative Code.

Title 19, Part 1, Chapter 4, Subchapter B specifically
deals with the "transfer of credit ..." concerning all public
institutions of higher education in Texas:

These websites may be helpful to you (a bit more userfriendly):

Also, although you said you were going for an AA degree,
be aware that there is a transfer limit of 21 core credit hours
for a BA or BS with a major in Criminal Justice. Don't discount
the possibility that you may want to get additional education
at some point in the future.
This pdf shows the listing of fully transferrable core courses:
