I don't have anything against HPISD, but the cost of housing in HP is v.high. I was considering Dallas but a couple of people have told me that they are not good with special needs children (I think they used words that conveyed worse than "not good"). Does anyone know otherwise?

Also....looking at a map I notice that the south part of the Grapevine school district doesn't seem like a long drive from Las Colinas? Is that the case? Google maps says about 25mins in traffic. I know Grapevine is good for regular kids, does anyone know how the GCISD is for special needs?
thanks
c

So far, from what I have found out Irving ISD, CF ISD and GC ISD do not offer what we get where we presently live (which I know is the exception rather than the rule). From age 3 special needs kids get 3 hours of school a day until age 6 (I didn't ask what happens then).

Default present services

At the moment she is in a substantially separate classroom, with some inclusion time for music and play, from 8am to 2pm. PT 3 x per week OT 3 x per week, Speech 3 x week, vision consult 2 x per month, augmentative communication 1 x week. Her classroom is wonderful there is a great teacher and 2 paraprofessionals with 5 students. Her improvement over the last 6 months has been phenomenal. I am really looking forward to moving to Dallas but I feel bad about removing her from such a great school.

Do you think her local IDP/IEP team could give you referrals about similar programs in DFW?

The problem is that where I live now is fantastic, I know that most neighboring towns don't offer what we get. I have spoken to a few organizations that deal with special needs to ask them about Texas and Dallas kids and unfortunately their responses and recommendations have been to transfer her to a private school

It might be a little more of a drive over Grapevine but check out the Garland ISD. They have GREAT Life classes. I know several kids that at 2 were getting special services for speech and other issues thru the district. It would be a straight shot down either LBJ or Hwy 190 depending on where in the district you lived to get to Las Colinas. We can get to the airport from our house in the Firewheel area close to 190 in rush hour traffic a little under an hour door-to-door (that is leaving here, doing the park-n-fly, boarding the shuttle and getting to the curbside check-in).

BTW, today is the Special Olympics for the Garland ISD. They hold it at Williams Stadium and one of the local school bands comes and plays for them and it is really a LOT of fun. I got to attend when my daughters band performed 2 years ago and it was totally AWESOME!!!! Today at my daughters school the Life kids all lined up and all of the other students stood out and lined up the hallways and they had a parade for them as they made their way out to the buses to head off to the games. It was totally cool.
