Can you go to any office or you do need to go to an office in the county you live in? I was planning on going to the Plano office this week in the morning to get my TX DL and hoping it wouldn't be too bad.

I waited in Plano for 3 hours for mine. From talking to others that went there, that is the typical wait.

I just got back from Lewisvile office. 1 hour and change. I overheard that it is much slower before the school gets out.

What time of day/week did you go? I went Monday and the line was out the door. The security guard said expect a 2.5 hour wait.

I have heard in general, mid-month and mid-week are good times to go.

I went this morning, decided to go to McKinney instead since it opens later (8am vs. 7:30). I don't mind the procedure, or the lines, but I do mind this:

When someone calls into that McKinney DPS for Drivers license questions, the people who are assisting us are the ones taking the calls!!! WTF!!! The lady will finish with someone then pick up the phone off hold and spend 10 minutes talking to that person, repeating things since they don't stick, giving detailed driving directions here, etc. Sometimes the lady will take calls (or pick up off hold) while she is helping someone in person!!

You'd think that the State of Texas would be smart enough to have a central call center for Driver License Questions and not even give out the numbers for local offices (or only have a recording on the local office number).

AT THE VERY LEAST you'd think they would have a dedicated person to answer questions there at the McKinney DPS and not use the people who are assisting the in-person people there. I mean, I already have to wait 10-15 minutes per person when I am in line A, B, or whatever, but then another 10 minutes to answer a phone call question is ridiculous.

I don't know how it works at other DPS offices, but this aspect of it left a VERY sour taste in my mouth.
