@SmartGXL - sorry that happened to you back then, and it sounds like you enjoy living where you live now (ironically, when I lived in Chicago, Wicker Park was quite a rough place - I was at the Double Door often to see friends' bands play - but it got yuppified just as I was leaving in '95). But I'm not sure what your point is - I never said that nothing bad every happens anywhere in Dayton (bad things can happen anywhere - city or suburbs). But I will say that the the typical suburbanite's fear of the city is way out of wack compared to actual danger.

Hi Billy,

Thank you for your response, I think the point I was trying to make was that although suburbanites do overplay some fears, there is still the need for everyone to always be on guard, no matter where they go.

"West" is a direction. To that extent those are "west."

"West Side" was once a specific neighborhood in Dayton, the approximate boundaries being Wolf Creek, the Great Miami river, West Third street and what was then called Western avenue. Officially the name per se has been deleted, changed, phased out.

Even back then the notion drifted a little beyond those boundaries, but in the days when busing started, influential sorts like news broadcasters repeatedly called everything west of the _Stillwater_ river as well as the Great Miami (half of the city) the west side, rather oblivious to the fact that the city lies in four directions. These days some people drop the word "side" making it even more vague and the northern half of town is without clear identity.

South of West Third thereabouts was called Edgemont.

Default Stay away from the west side period day or night!

While in the city of a Dayton you should feel comfortable as we do pay higher taxes to quail concerns in areas that are out of control with the sale of drugs and the high rate of crime, both petty and violent. However I've lived in Dayton or in the outskirts of Dayton for over half of my life and I'm now 41 and unfortunately we have continued to poor money into the "west side" of Dayton in fact twice as much on any given years as we spend on all other parts of the city in order to control crime and the constant declining of the housing the business's and the schools unfortunately to no avail! In fact it would seem the more our less then credible government poors into the west side if our town the further down the drain of civilization it falls! Each time I have to go to that side of town which I delimit as much as possible I fear for my safety, lock my doors, have 911 pre-dialed on my cell phone. I would also like to state some other facts in regards to the west side of our city which was the epicenter of our city, as much of our city it was built up in the 1890's to the 1920's and the majority of our most exquisite housing is located either on the west side or just west of downtown and while these houses have been going down hill steadily to the point that between the neighborhood being dangerous and the cost to repair these beautiful houses as they have been lowered in value to adjust for the high rate of crime and drug use in that area so the owners are a direct reflection of the area and they are not being taken care of and the problems in that specific area have zero chance to be brought back to there potential which it should be a tourist area based on the colonial and amazing traditional 3 to 4 thousand square ft. Houses built at the turn of the century, it's now become an are you avoid at all cost unless your looking to purchase crack or a prostitute or another firm of drug or gave a death wish you will avoid that area at all cost. All other areas of Dayton are minimal safe and most on the east side are very nice and we can only hope our city government will realize what all the rest of us already know and that is to stop wasting our cities monies on a lost cause and start using the tax money to keep the other sides safe from falling into these conditions and if our government doesn't wake up and start acting in a responsible manor we will vote them all out one by one until the parts of the city that are respectful and striving to keep the areas nice. And
Thank you for your start getting rewarded with the large majority of our tax money spent on the sides keeping up their end of the equation in order to reward them for there efforts to improve the properties. So that is a long answer but one anyone reading this post should appreciate knowing and if anyone can argue my points based on facts not blowhard personal feelings or underlying motives to defend the west side please feel free to change my mind with facts and perhaps some numbers on crime and pictures of any three streets that are back to back to back that are all still even complying with housing laws or regulations that are clearly a joke and aren't being enforced! Thanks and welcome to our city! Be safe and enjoy what we do have to offer.

For the most part, stay off of West 3rd St. There is not really anything out on West 3rd, so there should not really be a reason to drive thru there. Like Video said, most of the activities and shopping, etc these days, is out on I-675, or along Rt 725, which is south of town, and if you want to hang out in the Oregon Distrcit etc, those are in relatively safe areas of Downtown and there probably wont be any problems being there...use common sense, however.

Hahaha yeah, these kind of posts happen every once in a while... Always a fun read. The "one hit wonders".

Normally they come with bad grammar and urgency. I'd believe them more if they could put together a decent sentence. Often these are the same type of people that almost take a sense of pride in how deteriorated they perceive a city to be from their perch, wherever it may be. Rarely are they even connected with the city whatsoever.

Regardless, Leonhardt411, what do you think could be done to improve the ills you described? Do you have any proof these things are happening to the extent you described? Don't get me wrong, I know crime is higher along W Third outside of the Wright - Dunbar district than it is in most other places in the city or county. And I know a number of buildings there are dilapidated and many work low wage jobs or don't work at all. I get that.

But I'm not going to demonize it for being that way. I realize it could be a lot worse and I have hope it will get better. I go through there and support businesses in the area because I want to, and if you really want it to improve I suggest you do the same. Driving people away from the area through ill conceived posts like yours only make things worse for those who are working every day to make the west side a better place . Please consider whom you harm first.

Holy crap that was a lot of run-on sentences. I do agree with him somewhat that it is more sensical to focus on a neighborhood and specific area of town for revitalization rather than "putting out small fires" all over town without much progress from any of them.

You left out the bit regarding the extreme LACK of line breaks.

"Oh. I just type it out on my phone with my thumb. No one complains about my text style .... "

It may not be fair, but I evaluate a person's intelligence based on the written presentation of their ideas. ( I let speeling and grammamer errors go ... )

I gave up trying to stay with the post about half way. It's too bad, because it was interesting, as far as I got.
