Natives often just consider it an ordinary part of the fabric of life. It rarely gets even a mention in everyday conversation. But, unlike most other places in this world, "aviation" is in the background of much of Dayton. The United Nations World Heritage List is the right place for Dayton's aviation heritage.

Trying to tell someone unfamiliar with our area what all might be important to know is probably as variable as the individual -- it might be no more than how to get to the airport, if that. Meanwhile, our aviation heritage surely can't all be reduced to just a few sentences.

There's a neat little (free) service called "Dial & Discover" that provides a couple of minutes of pre-recorded information (audio tours) of more than thirty different local historic sites. Just call:

937-401-9985

and poke in a number like 3, 15 or whatever up to 32.

The list includes the likes of Carillon Park, Woodland Cemetery, Huffman Prarie Flying Field and McCook Field.

It's correlated in part with the Aviation Trail travel brochure information.

Sorry, but I don't see why it isn't easily understood.

The current ATI leaflet only lists 13 sites -- three in west Dayton, six in the area of the base, WACO, Woodland, Carillon and the Wright "B" Flyer. Dial & Discover covers 32.

Does that explain it?

As an Ohio (Legal) Immigrant, I'd like to make a couple of purely personal observations:

1. I understand that the Dayton-Vectrin Air Show is a commercial trade show. But, before moving here, I spent 23 years in the USAF and serviced pretty much all of the military aircraft that are on display at the air show. Everywhere else I was stationed, we always went to the air show on base and the entry was free. It just kinda galls me a bit to pay to see the same aircraft I worked on in the military...

2. Do they hafta have the Dayton-Vectrin Air Show on the hottest weekend of the year???

2. Ok, I'll quit now. There's nothing like the aroma of jet fuel and the scream of jet engines!

There's something about the threat of tornadoes (or a guest appearance by an actual tornado itself) that lends to the air show's je ne sais quoi.

At least it's not in Xenia.

I can imagine!

Unrelated, but: In August, '88 there was a very bad crash at an air show at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. I believe more than 100 people ultimately died. Wife & I would've ben there had I not crashed my car the day prior. (Damage to car; none to me)

Fate was telling you something.

Air shows are nice and it certainly doesn't hurt for people to get up close to some newish things; but, I think the lessons of the Wright Brothers' story are timeless and well worth interest.

Consider this: a lot of people are only able to go to school as much as the law demands, and definitely today they are often viewed rather on the bottom rungs of society, yet Wilbur Wright, who is more or less credited with actually figuring out the underlying principles of aviation, never finished high school.

Schooling is important, but it's written in history that it doesn't make someone important to the whole of a society.
