Hi,

Considering possible move for a job NW of dayton (near trotwood).

Are there recommendations for nice, small townish areas to live in around there?

My wife and I live in a small town right now, and love the feel of walking to our little downtown and sitting in the coffee shop. We live about 20 minutes from our nearest city, and that works just fine for us.

Obviously we're looking for some place safe...but hopefully a little bit of charm as well.

I don't see too many posts on Trotwood...Brookville is mentioned occasionally...is Tipp City worth the commute? Other places?

Thanks!

Do you have kids, because schools are going to be important. I'm not terribly familiar with the area, but I know Trotwood has a lot of negative issues. Brookville is a small town that is close by. The Clayton area might be worth taking a look at. I think Tipp is a cute little town, but I don't live there.

I think the OP has a good choice of places to put down on that house hunting list. Brookville, Englewood/Clayton, Tipp City, and Troy would be good starts. Englewood is more of a suburb, but rather small and somewhat charming. The more expensive homes in the Clayton/Englewood area (they both share Northmont schools and Clayton, which is both rural and suburban in parts, surrounds Englewood) are typically north of I-70.

Tipp City should not be too far, but Trotwood covers a large area, so if you are further south in Trotwood, it may be a long commute. Around the former Salem Mall area, and it would not be as bad.

Troy is just north of Tipp City, a little bigger, but home to a wonderful downtown area, decent schools, and close to the interstate. Troy's biggest downfall is it is the farthest away of the places I have mentioned.

Brookville is the most small-townish of the ones NW of the city. Englewood and Clayton are more suburbia, though Englewooe has a small-town core.

Might also look at Phillipsburg.

Forget Trotwood.

I'd also say Tipp City...which is probably the more desirable small town suburb north of the city.... but that would be more of a drive from the Trotwood area.

Brookville is probably your best bet. Take a look at the older part of town here:

..on edit, there is quite a bit of newer housing built up around this small town core, so you have a good range of housing choices.
