We use other streets; the system isn't as convoluted as it seems. :-) And for traffic calming purposes, we have these wicked evil ridged speed bumps in certain neighborhoods and miniature traffic circles.

So , am I to understand that the people on Grafton, for example cannot ever drive up their street and must park else where and walk to thier homes ?

Anyone know why Grafton is paved with bricks or cobble and the others are not ?

A chicane is a traffing calming effect that has a series of s- turns with a tight radius and curbs and one narrow lane which means cars must stop and wait for a turn if they meet oncoming traffic. It works.

If you zoom in on your maps as much as possible, you will see there are cars on the streets and in the driveways if there is one.

There are other streets in town which are not blacktopped. The most likely reason they are not blacktopped is because they are in good enough shape that they haven't needed easy repair, although a patch of East Fifth street was a different matter.

The area was built up after a flood in 1913. It's unlikely anyone expected traffic as in 2013.

Yes, I did see the cars on street, therefore, was confused when it was stated that residents use other streets. Also, Amanda said they do not have keys so I was wondering if the gates were up and not locked or they were always locked.

I am still amazed that ACLU or some other group has not taken up this issue with locked public streets.

There are cross streets that residents (or whoever, really) can use to get to the houses on Grafton. For example, to access the section of Grafton b/w Grand and Five Oaks, drivers would use Neal. As far as I know, there aren't any sections that are blocked off completely from traffic.

Also, the Delaware/Grafton gate is not really a gate, it's a decorative brick/concrete wall that says "Grafton Avenue" with pedestrian paths on either side. And yes, Tarheel8406 is correct as to the parking/driving in Five Oaks. I now feel like I should drive up and down Grafton to see if there are any traffic issues. :-)

Long ago.... If I wanted to get from certain parts of North Dayton to certain parts of the West Side (meaning the two neighborhoods respendent with descendents of people once inhabitants of the Carpathian Basin), I would presume to take the Ridge avenue bridge across the Stillwater river to North Main street, turn left then right on Deleware then left on Grafton to most likely Grand avenue to get across Salem avenue to something like Broadway for a bridge across Wolf Creek.... It's not only the most direct route, there are only about three traffic lights for which to wait, and with some zigzagging one might even avoid the one at Salem and Grand. And, I might mention there has also been a bridge from the western side of downtown that goes straight up Grafton avenue.

I made a point of mentioning the bus stop across the street from the Zavakos house in the other thread for a reason. The high school students (who came from all over town and points beyond) were encouraged (at least by the nuns) to use the Five Oaks bus -- they didn't want the students dodging between the traffic on North Main street to get to a bus, which some (like me) did anyway. (I hated riding that bumpy, smelly diesel bus and the walking distance was farther.) The pedestrian traffic alone around there had to be substantial twice a day five days a week from September to June. The school building is no more, but once it serviced hundreds of students only some of whom had circumstances where you didn't have to go downtown and transfer....

Yup, looks like a wall , not a gate. Wall seems far less inclusive than gate...as in Brandenberg Gate or Berlin Wall.

Don't mind me, I am Canadian, and we are a socialist country.

Yes, I read the post about the bus stop and tried to see it on google stret view.

Carpathian Peasant , everytime I see your name I smile as it reminds me of Time magazine reporting on the Montreal 1976 Olympics, calling Nadia Comeneci a " Carpathian princess playing in the sunlight ". I was 16 that summer and remember it all in great detail.
