I am from dayton and planning to buy a car from my friend who is in chicago. Can I just buy the car, get sign in the title and drive the car back? Now the title is also expired and I am confused.

I need to drive the car through the states of illinois, indiana and finally into ohio. Please advice.

Some say you can drive upto 7 days with old license plates. Should I or should I remove those license plates once bought?

The title is not expired, the license plates are expired. Some states may consider a tag that is expired less than a week a lesser offense but I don't know. In Ohio, expired is expired. If you are operating a vehicle with expired tags from a former owner you are either operating with out any tags or you are operating with fictitious tags, depending on how the officer wants to go with it. In either case you will be cited and your vehicle will probably be towed. You also need to speak with your insurance carrier to make sure the vehicle is covered under your policy. Either your friend needs to get a temp tag or you need to have the car signed over to you and get your own temp tag. If you get the transfer notarized at the BMV they can sell you a temp tag right there.

Your best bet would be to get an Illinois temporary tag to drive home on. And are you aware that any car brought from out of state has to be inspected? The inspection is very easy. The BMV can tell you how to do that.
