Is the Wright-Patterson AFB and the surrounding areas (Wright State University, Aerospace/defense offices, etc.) to the overall economic vitality and bringing in fresh transplants to the greater Dayton area? Is is considered a bright spot in an otherwise struggling rustbelt region, or is it simply one of many components to the areas economy.

Most of the people I know who are familiar with Dayton, have been or even lived there have done so in connection to the Air force/aerospace. And consequently, is this far east side of the Dayton area more socio-economically vibrant than the rest of the area?

Just curious. Thanks.

It is one of several components, and it is critical to the region. The base employs about 30,000 people, and thousands of people work off base in industries that support people at the base. Bases are economically vital to whatever city they are attached to.

Damn near everywhere outside of Dayton proper is more socio-economically vibrant. People who work at the base live all over the region.

It’s quite important, not only the base but a lot of the supporting industries nearby. Also factor in the family members it brings in (i.e. healthcare workers whose spouses work at the base support local hospitals). It’s not the only game in town, but it’s a pretty big one.

Vital. The sinkhole that would come about if WPAFB were to leave would swallow Dayton. Dayton barely survived NCR leaving.

WPAFB is more of a benefit to Greene County than Montgomery with the exception of Riverside. If not for WPAFB Fairborn and Beavercreek would probably not exist at least not in their current form. Most of the defense contractors along I-675 are based in Greene County as well and a lot of the houses in East Dayton are abandoned especially on E. 3rd because people just don’t want to buy a house on a street that busy, there are some well kept areas in E. Dayton but they are few and far between. I have friends who bought a house in E. Dayton that they are fixing up but despite a low purchase price it would be hard to recover the costs of fixing up a house when you resell which is why no one does it.
