The vast majority of coupons state that only one coupon can be used per purchased product. How then do people get to use six coupons for one product, making the item free or nearly free? Are people cheating the system? Do they bully the cashier until they give in?

Also, I have a friend at work that thinks using coupons are "dumb". I may be "dumb", but I saved near $58 at Kroger this week using those "dumb" coupons.

Lots of factors. Each supermarket is different. Some let you double the value of a coupon. Some let you use the coupon for up to 3 items(for example) and some let you use separate coupons that are unrelated.

I know for most stores, you can use both a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon on the same item.

If I were going to get serious about the coupon craze, I would read around on this site:
CouponMom Forum
It seems friendly, helpful and has tons of related information.

I put a lot of the blame on stores. If they would simply put their foot down to those who break the rules, it would stop a lot of issues. Sadly, you can rely on the public to be honest.
