Hello:

I will be staying in a Rehoboth Beach hotel (Oceanus Motel, 6 2nd st) this weekend. People frequently criticize Rehoboth Beach for its crowds. Is Dewey Beach less crowded? If it is, are there any drawbacks to going there to swim/lay out as opposed to Rehoboth?

Thanks.

IMO, Dewey is more crowded and more of a party zone. The two towns are right next to each other, though, so they're somewhat interchangeable. The area near Silver Lake is halfway between the most crowded parts of both beaches--you might find a little more breathing room there. That middle section includes parts of both Rehoboth and Dewey.

Both are crowded. Rehoboth more family oriented and Dewey college - post college party crowd.

If you want a nice beach that in our experience was less crowded you can go to the beach in Lewes. Simply hug the coast and just past Carvel on the right side of the road is a lovely beach with restrooms and a small concession stand. You need to feed the meters with quarters but they do have change machines. I would be prepared so you don't have to wait on the change lines, which we noted were long!!!

Since you are staying on 2nd St I would leave my car parked at the motel and walk to the beach. Had you been staying out on RT 1 I would have recommended going to on of the State Parks.

Not sure what beaches you are used to, but Dewey and Rehoboth will have crowds. Dewey has many houses that people share for the summer (some rent beds that are in former dining rooms) so there are plenty of people there enjoying the beach as Rehoboth. I would walk to beach from where you are staying as I presume you choose it b/c of it's proximity to the beach.
