Hi,

From a cursory web search, I stumbled upon Bylers (Dover), Spence's Bazaar (Dover), and Lorenzo's Pizza (Odessa), made a trip to each and loved it. I also learned about Helen's sausage house but didn't get to visit.

So I was wondering for those who have more experience, what is your favorite Grocery, Baker, Butcher, or Food Store in Kent County? I would also love to know why its your favorite?

Are the prices fantastic, the people warm and welcoming, unique items?

Bylers was great and their excellent prices in the bulk items left me definitely wanting to return.
Their stove shop had very very nice ceramic smoker/cooker/barbecues and wood burning stoves
that looked like pieces of artwork.

I would imagine there are many gems of stores large and small that people love. I am hoping
to learn what they are if you would be interested in sharing.

I even picked up a brochure in a WaWa's packed with purveyors of Amish made goods and services.

Thank you in advance!

I first started going to Byler's back when they were on Pearson's Corner Rd., a little block building. I guess that was 35-40 years ago, or more. They certainly have expanded, and the $1.00 double dip ice cream cone draws people to walk around and shop. A couple years ago, they added another store in Harrington, so the $1.00 double dip ice cream cone is WAY to accessible.

Spence's Bazaar's Amish market is a turn-off for me. Those Amish come from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and transport their meats, cheeses and other from up there. I prefer to support local Amish, and I'm not crazy about transporting all the food stuffs from Pennsylvania.

Witt Brothers Mkt. in Wyoming is our favorite butcher shop, for fresh meats. It's a little store, but has been a big business for 30-40 years. Doesn't hurt that we're walking distance from Witt Bros.

Fifer's Orchards, outside of Wyoming, is our veggie/fruit market. They open April 1st. It's an addictive place, farm atmosphere, huge country porch on which to relax, and bins of whatever is in season - peaches, apples, pumpkins, and such. Ice cream cones there, too.....much more expensive than Byler's. (not that I'm hung up on ice cream cones ) Fifer's is a bike ride away for us. Except.....I sold my old clunker for $5.00 to my Amish friend, and she took the pedals off to make it an Amish scooter.

Our fresh churned butter, buttermilk, and fresh chickens come from local Amish. I know them, since I was raised with Amish. If they have items for sale, there's a little stand at the end of their lane. Hint: Never honk your horn for service. They will see you if you drive up. And, never drive up their lane. Another hint - make sure you have a Delaware license plate on your car, and if you don't have a good 'ole Delaware redneck accent, don't talk much.

Simply Charming, located in the old Wyoming Mill, and overlooking Wyoming Pond, is our favorite place to browse and pick up unique gifts. That old mill holds a warm place in our hearts, since we transported grain there from our farms, more than 60 years ago. The grinders and loading docks are still in place.

So many places, so much history.....such a wonderful long life in Delaware. Glad I was born and raised here!

Smile I'm ready for some ice cream!

I'll be down there next week and just got the directions to Byler's, both locations. I hope it is warm enough by then to try some of that ice cream. I'll be in Harrington at the bbq fest the weekend after this, so can try the Harrington location then. Looks like an interesting store. If rdlr likes the ice cream, I'm sure I will, too.
