Poof: Tilting Span of Delaware Highway Taken Off Google Maps | NBC 10 Philadelphia

Since I-495 will be closed for quite some time, I can see the city of Wilmington having an inadvertent economic spike over the next year or so.

Thoughts?

I see a lot more traffic on 95. No reason to go INTO Wilmington.

I-95 is just going to be a bigger pain all around greater Wilmington. We don't have to venture out on it until Sunday, when at least it won't be as bad as during the week. Report in the paper today suggested that the bridge problem came about due to a contractor dumping a very large amount of dirt all around the base of the bridge, likely causing the soft soil beneath to compact and sink.

Actually my commutes to Philly have been progressively lighter this week. I suspect a lot of the "passing through" traffic is opting for 295.

Wow, I can't believe no one has talked about the bridge saga on here. I find it fascinating and horrifying that DelDOT had such a slow response time. Kuddos to the Engineer who sent them pictures. And why did they not investigate after the business owner called 911 in April? Do they really get that many prank calls about a major bridge having an issue that they wouldn't want to check it out? I can't wait to see what the true damage is and what fix they propose!

I've always found that bridge makes for a bouncy ride. If that dirt pile has indeed caused such a catastrophic shift in less than two years, then that's some seriously soft ground that bridge is sitting on. And if the shift is blamed entirely on the dirt piling, it'll be interesting to see who has to pay for all this, considering the land is owned by DuPont, but leased and subleased by two contractors. I've got a feeling there'll be lawsuits and maybe bankruptcy for the contractors. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes right now.
