I have a few more years till retirement and I'm thinking of moving out of New Jersey to Clayton, DE.. I love Jersey but the Taxes here are crazy. Clayton is also listed as a safe area. I don't want to be to close to the water because I have been flooded in Jersey with all the major hurricanes. So I want safe, quiet, and no flooding at all. Is Clayton the correct choice? We have no problem driving down to the water, just don't want it in my house.

I have a good friend who lives in Clayton and really likes it. The area is very quiet, appears to be very safe, and you will find quite a few small farms and homes with large lots. There is a small "downtown" area with a nice family restaurant that has very good food. My friend works at the deli and says that they are always busy. I have no idea about flooding but I don't see that as a problem.

It might be perfect for you if you like having neighbors nearby but not on top of you, you do not need night life, low taxes, don't mind driving for shopping, and you like the quiet.

We were farmers in the Clayton area for a number of years, leaving there in 1983. It was nice then, but it's nicer now! Clayton and Smyrna are twin towns with one running into the other. Sales have really picked up in the Smyrna-Clayton, as the Original Poster probably knows. Smyrna is undergoing a downtown revitalization. Here's an article in the Smyrna paper telling what is planned.
A vision for the future: downtown Smyrna revitalization finally a reality - News - Smyrna/Clayton Sun-Times - Smyrna, DE
The next link is an article telling about Clayton being the safest town in Delaware.
