Hi everyone,

I am moving to Newark in a couple of weeks from now for the first time. I am a single male in 30's, previously lived in Cleveland Ohio and NYC and these days I am searching my options for good and affordable neighborhoods to live in Newark (near the university).

In my search so far, it seems possible to find a studio or 1 bed apartment for less than $1000 in the suburbs but I haven't read much positive about the public transport over there so that is a bit of a concern. Any useful advice especially with reference to safety, nearby markets and quality of life in general is highly appreciated.

Thanks.

You are correct in your findings regarding public transit. Delaware is certainly not known for it!

Are you an outdoor person? If so, you are in a great area for hiking, biking, etc. White Clay Creek & Fair Hill are nearby with miles of trails.

Markets - Delaware has no shortage of strip malls. I've heard that a Trader Joe's is going up in nearby Christiana. Nearby farmers markets that I can think of would be the Sunday farmers market at Newark Co-op and there is another set up at Carousel Park which is not too far away.

Are you looking at a specific part of Newark?

I am a fairly active person who likes to go out walking or jogging etc. daily. Coming from north east Ohio, I believe Delaware has relatively mild winters. Newark seems to be a bike friendly city too which is great

However I will be working full time on my research at the university of Delaware main campus and I do not have a car or even a driving license in the begining so I have to be close to the campus.

My rent budget (around $1000) is a bit low so I may have to adjust accordingly. The uncertainty with the pandemic situation and the relatively lower quality of public transport just add a few more variables to the equation unfortunately.
