My son who recently graduated from college has accepted a job at the nuclear plant in Jersey. He starts Aug 1 and we are looking for apartments. We live in Mass so we are not able to make a trip down prior to him relocating and are looking for advise on apartments and areas to live.

When are you moving? August 1
Where are you coming from? Massachusetts
Why are you moving? Job at Nuclear plant in NJ

Will you buy or rent? Rent
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? would like to keep it under $1000 but will go a bit higher for safe area if needed
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? no preference

Are you married or single? Do you have children? single
Do you have pets? no
Are you keeping a car? yes

What do you want to be closest to?
Shopping
Basic services (supermarket, drugstore, etc.)
Nightlife

We have found these complexes and opinions are appreciated on these as well as other places that may be a better fit

Cavalier Country Club
Christina Reserve
Hunters Crossing
Galloway Court
New Castle Crossing
Brandywine Woods

Priority is safety, cost and preferably under an hour commute to work.

If you live in Delaware and work in N.J. it might complicate your income taxes where you will need to file in both states. Perhaps your son can get some recommendations from his future employer.

(You would also need to pay a daily toll going over the bridge.)

I lived in DE and worked in NJ for a bit. The tax issue is relatively straightforward in a tax software do it yourself way. You pay NJ taxes as a non-resident and you pay DE state taxes. DE gives you a credit for taxes you pay to NJ. So effectively you pay to DE whatever is the difference between what you pay to NJ and what you would have paid to DE had you made that money in DE.
