Best time to catch crabs is on the rising tide if you are crabbing from a bank or pier. The crabs follow the tide. If in a boat it really doesn't matter.

I always figured that there would be fat crabs around the power plant and chicken processing plant. I just can't seem to make myself eat anything from Indian River Bay.

dumpling, I have memories of crabbing in IR bay before the big storm of '62. (Of course I recall being an infant.
) There was a small marina near the inlet. It had a rickety old dock that went out. We sat on there and pulled in soooo many crabs. The storm took it all away.
Another time we took a boat out. The tide was going out, and we were not strong enough to row against it. So we got out and pushed the boat back to the marina. Yep. Sloppy bottom! We probably could have clammed with our toes, but our interest in sea food was trying to not
be sea food at that point. Ha!
We were only there for a week each summer at that time. Still, it's a large part of my childhood memories. Back when you could actually drive to Rehoboth and find a parking space in season! It was a big deal sending post cards from the little post office that was in Bill's store in Bethany. Whoops...sorry for the drift.
....misty water colored memories....of the way things were.

Seriously, we were there at Indian River, too!
I guess we all passed each other at one time or another .....HEY.....That could be a song!
I remember that huge restaurant at the Inlet, or large building that later became a DNREC or another type of government building, but that was probably before your time (both of you). My dad would board a party boat from the Inlet, and my mom, sister and I would take the pickup, go back to Rt. 1, climb the sand dunes and sit on the beach until noon.......eating melted chocolate candy bars! Duh!

I'm going to pass and let CaroleM be the teacher, since my crab pots are old, and I use string that I bought at K-Mart a long time ago (don't know the gauge). My crab net has a long handle, about 3 feet, and it's old too. I think if you go to WalMart, you'll find one of those. Just picture yourself with your string out there, pulling it up, and needing something to put that squirming thing in. So, you'll need the long handled net. O.K. CaroleM........it's your turn.......
