I have a tank on my property that was not put there by any propane dealer. It was brought here as junk. How can I find out who owns this tank

How do you know it was brought there as junk? If it was brought there as junk you may need to find someone to take it. I had to have a tank removed and it cost me $150, but the tank belonged to them. Since there is gas involved no one will touch it. I would imagine that one company will take it but it will not be cheap.

That's easy....if you own the property....YOU....own the tank.

I would like to use the tank that is on my property but no one will fill it without a bill of sale. It does have a serial number on it. Is there a way to find out who owns or owned the tank. The sticker on the tank is very faded and can not really be read - - no telephone number.

Not really. There are two options. You can rent it or own it. One company will not fill another tank. This was our experience until we bought our own tank. Now we can go anywhere we want to have it filled.

I would call one company and explain and ask them if they can either fill or help you find out who owns the tank. If you are in a community ask a neighbor because they often did the entire community.

Hmm.....I'd go to the county or municipal agency in your area (maybe the local Fire Marshall) who is responsible for making sure pressurized tanks are safe, my guess is they need to be re-tested and certified every so often. Your local LP sales guy may be able to help you with this. Anyway, they should be able to tell you its history based on the serial number. Knowing the tank's capacity (dimensions) may help as well. If it was scrapped, there's likely a reason it was no longer serviceable (having been in service too long, or leaking and too expensive to repair, etc.). May be easier to call a steel scrapper and see what they'll give you for it. Do you know for sure that it's empty?
