Hi Theresa,
My husband and I moved from PA a year and a half ago to a 55+ community.

Which senior community are you thinking of?

There are many 55+ communities in and around the Dover area.

Coming from CT, you will find the winters much milder. The summers should be pretty much the same. Nothing drastic
the homes and taxes here are much cheaper than in PA and I'm sure the same for CT.
I found food to be a tad more expensive here but I"m told that it's just gone up in the year.

If you are retired, it is a good place to retire. De is becoming the new Florida, so I am told. In fact, we have quite of few who moved here from Florida because of the weather and insurance.

moving in and around the Dover area, your not that far from the beaches, Phila or even Maryland.
The location is great. Plus Dover area has a load of stores and restauants.
You definately need a car though. Public transportation is not great in this area. Doesn't seem to be any. Well there is a bus but I never see it. Coming from Philly, there were all over the place. Hubby was a bus driver.
So you do need to drive.

Last but not least.........community life.
We LOVE it absolutely LOVE it. You certainly are not lonely. We moved from another state not knowing a soul and made an instant family with a pool, clubhouse and gym at our fingertips.
I knew 2 years before we moved this is the life I wanted. Much simpler and a load of fun with less work for mother

Good luck to you and anything else I can help you with just give a hollar.
Also,
There are a few on this board that are interested in moving to De and have researched every nook and cranny that would be happy to share what they have learned..........I'm sure.

Hi Theresa,

I have to admit that, until quite recently, I didn't even know what a 55+ community was! My mother is in a retirement community for 65+ in another state. They have all the features of the typical (I gather) 55+ community--swimming pools, exercise room--plus art/hobby rooms, library, meeting rooms, dining rooms, grocery store, bank and, in addition, excellent medical care and assisted living at various levels. It is, however, an expensive place in an expensive state.

It's important to know exactly what you need now, or may be likely to need soon.

Annie

Teresa, there are a lot of threads on this Delaware forum that talk about various 55+ retirement communities and/or retiring in Delaware. I hope you have lots of free time to read them all. LOL Try doing a search: "55+ Retirement communities" (without the quotes) and see what comes up.

Theresa, I agree with the other posts, but once again--are you clear as to what you're looking for? You've said "a Senior Community."

There are striking differences between 55+ communities and many of the true "senior" communities, at least as I understand it. That is, senior communities which require at least one spouse to be 65 or older.

As I've said, having learned from my mother's experience, these latter communities are much more complete, in the sense of having everything that one needs on the grounds, most notably health care, assisted living if needed, and, in my mother's community, a small hospital, though this is mainly for aftercare, and for those who become chronically ill during the years they are living in the community.

I'm not trying to promote my mother's retirement community! As I've said, it isn't in Delaware, is expensive, and there's a very long waiting list.

.

Yeah, this is a good point. Big difference between 55+ and senior living.
Westmister Villiage is on that comes to mind.
They have senior living plus assisted living.

Smile Delaware 55+ Communities.

Hi Theresa,
My husband and I purchased a villa( townhome) in Heritage Shores in Bridgeville, DE. We are, approximately, 25 miles south of Dover. It is a beautiful community with an 18 hole golf course, indoor and outdoor pools, 38,000 sq. ft. clubhouse, and many other amenities. Most of our major shopping is in Dover or in Salisbury,MD which is south of Bridgeville.
Ony one spouse has to be 55. We are from NJ and won't be retired for awhile. After researching many adult communities in Pa, NJ, and DE our choice was an easy decision. We purchased early to take advantage of lower, pre- construction prices. We don't play golf but their are so many other opportunities for an active or very relaxed lifestyle.
As for Delaware as a state, it is close to D.C., Annapolis, the beautiful seashore, Baltimore Inner Harbor, taxes are much lower and the people are great ! We are so glad that Delaware will soon become our " home- state ".
Half the fun is looking around. Good Luck !

Hi Theresa!

In Smyrna, Spring Meadows
In Frederica, Roesville Estates, Fiddlers Creek
I think that Canterbury Village is a 55 Plus community

There are a few others, I just can't think of them off of the top of my head.

There is one in Magnolia (actually there might be two) that you might want to consider.
