Yeah, I was told that about Auburn Gresham. Nothing wrong with being around my own people. I like diversity, but if I can't afford a neighborhoond in my price range that has more of a mix, I doubt AG will bother me.

I just heard from two contacts out there and one said $40k would be ok starting out. Another lady who is a single mom, said she makes less than me and has her own condo in Joliet, and that I would be find on that for myself and my daughter.

Others can advise you better than I on the south side of the city, but I can give you some insight into Will County (place of my birth). Minooka is a up and coming area, much like Middletown would be in Delaware. Good school I believe and a reasonable commute to Joliet.

More crime in Bolingbrook, but the rents are probably more affordable too. Plainflield is changing quickly, but if you are a minority be careful. Big KKK area for many, many years. Lockport gets a bad rap, so check it out also.
Downers Grove is expensive, Glendale Heights a long, long commute.

Joliet school system needed some help a while back, but the have a great Catholic school system if desired. Also look west to Yorkville. They too are know for a good school system and the commute should be as easy as that area might get.

Check out the entertainment at the Rialto Theater and the fried chicken at White Fence Farms (if it's still there). Ley me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help.

Thank you, this is very helpful!! I am here now in Chicago, getting ready to leave, but I will be back next week in Joliet. I am so excited. Love this city. I hear though that Minooka is not very welcoming to minorities. That is what some African-Americans told me that live here in Chicago and one works in Will County and said he would not recommend that I live there.

Auburn Grasham, like Englewood are areas slated for re-development, so while there are pockets of nice areas in those neighborhoods, not yet an ideal living situation.

But, If you live move to Chicago, you prob want to live in Wrightwood, Mt. Greenwood or Hyde Park for nicer areas on the south side. Or even Evergreen park which is technically not Chicago, but like a suburb inside of the city due to it's proximity and walking distance between the south side neighborhoods in Chicago (including the Wrightwood area). If you want to be closer to downtown for work, then maybe the (Med District/UIC village/Tri-taylor/Greektown) area near the Univ. of Il at chicago campus or the River north area near Northwestern Hospital and Michigan mile shopping (pricey, but nice).

Funny that you mention the medical district, because when I was there on this Thursday and Friday, the position I applied for was very close to the Med District area and it seems like a pretty decent area. Got a great cheeseburger from this little shop on the corner of Ogden & Taylor (the name excapes me),, oh wait, think it wa Lulu's, something like that.

I also visited Auburn Gresham and I can see what you were speaking of from pockets of nic to not so nice. I checked out a condo there, and while the condo itself was ok, I think I would look other places before settling there. I did see some apartments from the outside at least, that looked pretty nice in the Blue Island area, which would not be far from the job I applied for in the City of Chicago at all. Any thoughts on the Blue Island area?
