As one who has had numerous root canals, I can tell you it depends how bad the tooth is before you have the procedure done. Why are you having the root canal done? Did the nerve die, was it infected, were you having pain? The reason behind why you are having the root canal is important, as well as the length of time the tooth was causing you trouble...

Had one years ago and it wasn't nothing! Specialist gave me these great lil goggle-type glasses that had a tv in them. I switched channels and found an old rerun of Knots Landing episode. Sat there in complete comfort while watching the entire show. He told me that he gave me 5 shots of novacaine, or some newer type of numbness shot and even had to cut away part of my gums, but didn't feel one thing! The only part that hurt was having to pay $650 bucks up front, but getting reinbursed later from our insurance. That was probably 10 years ago, now the price is probably $2000!!!

Had my first and only last year. The pain I was in prior to the root canal was terrible. The procedure itself was fine; the recovery was not bad at all either.

Just curious Christina, do you mind telling me what it cost you? I just want to see how much the procedure has gone up since mine was done.

I would think it wouldn't hurt since you do get numbed but why do I always hear these horrible stories about root canals?
I don't know and I wonder why people say horrible things about root canal. I've had a number of them, and there was never any pain involved.

I've read through this entire thread and you guys have made me feel so much better. Thank you all for sharing your stories. I just found out today that I have to get one. I've had no problems my whole life (yay - only one cavity up to this point) but now I've got a serious problem. Yuck! I'm glad to know that they're not as bad as it would seem.

I have had root canals on several teeth. Believe it or not I have never had anesthetic - except for the most recent one. The hardest part s keeping your mouth open for that long.

Root canals are controversial these days. Some say it's better to yank the tooth. The dentist does his best to sterilize the root area, but it's impossible to get it completely sterile before sealing it off. Infections can develop in there over years, and start eating away at the bone. Some people who have had their root canal work removed have discovered rot inside. Eww. It can affect your health insidiously.

I guess this isn't what the OP wanted to hear.

Most of mine have lasted for many, many years but I had one pop and have to be redone twice. I think that there was something more at play there. I used to get gum ulcers above that upper tooth. I finally told the doc to rip it out. I haven't had a problem since.

Since this is a two-year old thread, I'm guessing the OP had the root canal. Either she died or it went well.

R.C.'s are just boring. Last time, I brought an iPod and some earphones so I could listen to music. The weird thing that happened, though, was that my EYE got numbed by the novocaine. I had double-vision in that eye for about two hours and had to wear a band-aid to keep it shut so I wouldn't get dizzy. That was a first.
