I had Versed (a narcotic) via IV for my hernia surgery; it knocked me out so thoroughly that I don't remember a damn thing - woke up when they were wheeling me into the recovery room and I asked incredulously if it was over already. Side effect: nausea that evening and the next morning. What I had was not supposed to be general anesthesia, but to me the difference is spitting hairs. That is powerful stuff, and just the thought of how powerful it is gives me the willies, but I seem to have come through it with no ill effects on my mental acuity. May because I didn't have too much to begin with.
I did not suffer from any nausea afterwards at all, though I have heard that some do.
