Default Forget Root Canals

I just recently had a root canal done, and my tooth bothers me more now than before the procedure!! I came across some VERY INTERESTING research data concerning root canals just a few hours too late... If you're thinking about getting a root canal, you should really check this out. I would have never gotten one if I had known about this. Hopefully this will help someone else make a better choice!!

I have heard of SOO many root canals never actually helping the tooth and having to get it pulled anyway later on. I'm worried about this happening especially since I'd be paying for the root canal out of pocket and then for it to not work or something. It would be a waste of the money. Do I root canal it or just have it pulled? I am 28 years old as an FYI if that matters.

I also dont want to pull it and then get an implant or bridge or anything. But the dentists say it will screw up your teeth by leaving a space is that true or a ploy to get money? Because I know 3 people who have had teeth pulled over 10 years ago and their teeth have never shifted into the hole. ???

Dr. Mercola is a _WELL KNOWN_ medical conspiracy theorist. In other words, he's a quack, and most of the internet world is aware of that. Weston Price's ideas were debunked in the 1950's.

I was down in Algodones, Mexico (the dental clinic capital of Mexico?) last week and had a crown put in. The first two clinics I went to were everso eager to do a root canal, stem, crown, first estimate $600, 2nd was $440.
At the last place, I was all set to go ahead with the root canal procedure, but the specialist was booked up for the rest of the day, and the next day, so I wandered down the street to yet another dental clinic.

This dentist gave me the lowdown on root canals, stating a 80-20% chance that even with the root canal, I still might have pain, a 20% chance. That was enough for me to ask him for alternatives, and he suggested that he merely put a crown in, and the reasons for doing so, and I opted for that alternative. $150! I had to wait a day for the crown to be ready, but in the meantime, I got to talk to all the others in Algodones there for dental work, and many from Canada, where I heard horror stories about how expensive dental work is up there! Small wonder they fly down to Yuma, then go on over to Algodones for their dental work!

I have an 8YO crown that is going bye-bye, on the other side, and will return in the Fall to that have replaced. He also found a crack in one of my lower teeth, so I may have that crowned at the same time, or I may just have it done in Tijuana, where I had my first crown put in.

I've talked with a number of co-workers at work, with those that have had successful and unsuccessful, root canals/dental implants, and I'm praying this crown is going to do the job, long term. And if not, then I'll resign myself to a root canal.

Is why it's so dangerous to seek third and fourth opinions in an attempt to get a prognosis that suits what you -want- to hear, rather than accepting what you know is most likely to be true.

A root canal treats a very specific thing. A crown treats something else.

If you need a root canal, a crown will not only not fix it, it will make it worse, and can possibly lead to infection and abcess, bone loss, and ultimately, losing the tooth entirely.

If you need a crown, but you don't need a root canal, then a root canal is an unneccessary medical procedure and a waste of time and money.

Root canals -often- also need crowns, but not always. It's prudent to get a crown after a root canal anyway, but in some cases, it's not medically necessary, though it might be the superior cosmetic and supportive option.

There is no 20% chance that you will have "pain" following a root canal. That is a nonsensical answer. You -will- have pain following a root canal. It's a pretty violent procedure and you -will- be sore for a few days after it.

However, the nerve pain - will cease, if the root canal is done correctly. That's because - a root canal procedure removes the nerve. No nerve = no pain. The gum around it will be sore. The bone supporting it will be sore. Your cheek will be sore, your jaw will be sore, the teeth next to the root canal might be sore as well. There's a lot of poking and prodding and drilling and needles and cheek-pulling and pinching going on during root canal. But the root of that tooth? Not sore. The root will have been removed completely. That's what a root canal procedure IS. It is the removal of the root, which contains the nerve. And then it is the refilling of the hollowed-out canal with an artificial post, and then the post is secured with a filling. And then - most commonly, a crown is placed over the whole thing.

If there's nothing wrong with the nerve or root of your tooth, then no, you wouldn't need a root canal treatment, so there's no reason why you'd want to have one. But if there -is- something wrong with the root or nerve of your tooth, then a crown will not do a thing to help it. It'll just cement it up and make it more difficult to treat when it starts getting worse.

If your tooth is severely infected, you should get the root canal. Unlike what most people think, root canal treatment only hurts during the procedure but not after. If your dentist offer sedation, avail it.

anonchick ( or someone else ), pls help me feel better.
i went to get a root canal, 2nd appointment, 1st appointment he looked at the xrays and then told me what has to be done.

however after sedating me (2nd appointment) taking more x-rays , half-way thru he said that he found a fracture and could not complete it. delta insurance DENIED any payment. so i am stuck with a $500 bill !! he said that the only option is pulling the tooth (it does not hurt me at all, until it does i am not going to pull it). delta would have paid partial if the root canal was done.

what i am wondering is COULDN'T THE ENDODONTIST LOOK AT THE INITIAL X-RAY to tell me he could't do the root canal ?? i am stuck with this bill for a procedure he couldn't do !

i am feeling depressed about this .. would not have gone to the 2nd appointment only to be told he could not complete this .. pls explain .. thx you ..

Re: the fracture: the x-rays don't always show fractures in the tooth, the dentist doesn't know until he gets to it that there's a problem. X-rays aren't foolproof, expecially with teeth, because teeth are sandwitched tightly in the gum and a fracture can still be invisible when the two pieces of tooth are fitting perfectly together.

Re: keep til it hurts: You're better off keeping until someone recommends pulling. If you wait til it hurts, you'll be dealing with one visit, where they determine you have an infection and they can't touch it til the antibiotics kick in - and another visit to pull the tooth after the antibiotics did their job.

If you had a broken arm, but it wasn't hurting, would you -not- get it taken care of, until it started to hurt?

As for the coverage - talk that over with the dentist/billing office to see if you can work out a plan, OR ask them if they can put what you pay, toward the cost of some other expense, such as things that aren't covered by Delta that you might need, or if Delta pays only 50% or 80%, you can apply it toward your portion of the payment for the next thing.

As for feeling depressed, it's not a world-shattering event. Everyone gets stuck paying for something they didn't plan on spending, eventually, sometimes a lot more than is comfortable. It stinks, but it happens.
