Well, it's happened again... A piece of 40-year-old filling fell out, then the whole side of the tooth broke off, and finally the rest of the filling came out. It doesn't hurt now, but the last time this happened, I ended up with an agonizing apical abscess during the holidays; very inconvenient! This time, I'm supposed to be traveling this week and have an appointment for next week (the soonest they could get me in anyway). Is it safe to leave it - and leave home - until then? I thought the office might request to at least see it or suggest a temporary filling, if such a thing exists, but they just said to call if I experience pain in the meantime. I'm nervous!

Call the office and have them ask the dentist. It just depends on how much of the tooth broke off, and whether there is decay in the area. It seems like they should be willing to at least take a quick look. I once had a crown fall off the day before a planned vacation trip, and the dentist actually met me at the office on a Sunday morning to fix it after I called his emergency number.
Check with a local pharmacy. There are OTC emergency "temporary" dental repair kits (using dental wax) that could protect the exposed part of the tooth. Clove oil is good for mouth pain.

Walmart sells a package of white stuff that will temporarily fill the filling hole. IIRC it comes in a little purple container. It's in the section where oragel is
