(2) If you have a cavity and can't see a dentist, are there small things you can do yourself that might help? For example, Sensodyne toothpaste - would that help if you have pain from a cavity? I think it's more for receded gums.
Also, would large amounts of mouthwash make a difference?
Sensodyne has potassium nitrate in it which is a desensitizer, that why it works so well on certain spots of the tooth. As for reason why cavities hurt, it's usually because the cavitated lesion is beyond the enamel and into the dentin, which has the dentinal tubules. Enamel doesn't have nerve endings, it's only when you get past the enamel where you may feel it. Also, once it gets to the dentin, the cavities spread faster, which is why when a dentist sees it beyond a certain point they will go in and fix it. And obviously the deeper the cavity and closer it is the the pulp tissue, the more sensitive it's going to be.
You could temporarily use oil of cloves. Get it at the pharmacy, no prescription. But, please, get to the dentist ASAP.
