I have gone back and forth between using a regular toothbrush (soft or at most medium) and Sonicare. I'm always told I need to do a better job. I don't know what else I can do. I don't have cavities, but I do have a lot of plaque buildup between cleanings.

A dentist told me one time that the amount of plaque buildup you have is a result of the bacteria in your particular mouth and some people are just plaque formers and others aren't. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. My husband has always drank a lot of beer and I am pretty much a nondrinker. You'd think that would work in my favor too.
You're right. Some people just create more plaque than others. I don't know why, though.

Yrs ago i knew a guy who chewed snuff alot. He would often fall asleep with copenhagen in his mouth. He had pretty girlfriends & he would kiss them right after he spit out his snuff. It was quite gross & you could see the snuff on his girlfriends lips. He rarely brushed his teeth & never flossed. Im sure by now all his teeth are gone. I know some women chew snuff especially in alaska. Some women dont use dedorant as well. My neighbors granddaughter is one of them & shes only 17. Her teeth look ok though.

This is gross, but when you floss, you will probably notice a less than pleasant odor. Flossing gets the nasty stuff out of the nooks and crannies which can cause bad breath. Flossing can also save you from death...really. People have died from bacteria in the mouth traveling to the heart and causing a fatal infection.

This being said, you can get as good a result, maybe better, by using a waterpik. This is what we do, and our hygienist always praises us for being good flossers, when we really only waterpik. I think the waterpik also toughens the gums and keeps them healthy.

I cannot imagine not flossing. Once on a business trip I realized late at night I had forgotten my floss. Was staying in a boutique hotel, the type with no little store. So I started walking until I found a small store and got some. Yes, I'm nuts.

I think some people are lazy, and their parent's generation didn't floss so they didn't see it growing up.

Because people are taught as kids that it's important to brush your teeth. Flossing has always been less emphasized than brushing. Plus, they never show anyone flossing their teeth on TV/movies. It isn't sexy.

It figures that, if TV doesn't depict something, the idiot masses won't be inclined to do it.

Ah, the cocksure attitude of the uninformed. If people have teeth that are crowded, food particles get caught between them, in the space just above the gum line. Floss gets rid of it.
