For a week or so now, a small spot in the gums above one of my teeth has hurt and bled when brushed, and when I touch it, but it causes no other pain. Eating and applying pressure to the tooth causes no pain.

I'm worried that this could be an abscess, but I don't have any other symptoms such as bad breath or a bad taste in my mouth. In addition, I am currently abroad and cannot see a dentist without incurring a large expense.

What could this be?

You could have just cut your gum on a piece of food. Or it could be an abscess or a fistula. I had a fistula after a root canal a couple of weeks ago but it didn't bleed or hurt (probably due to the root canal).

Google both abscess and fistula and see if what you're experiencing matches those symptoms. Both can become serious, especially abscesses which really do require immediate attention. Watch out for a bump or zit developing on your gums. Having a nasty taste in your mouth is another sign something's wrong (comes from pus draining into your mouth). If you develop a fever, get your butt to a doctor.

I think the stated symptoms are not very similar to abscess. Abscess symptoms include severe pain that does not end, foul smell, swollen neck glands, bitter taste and fever. So, don’t worry and get it checked with dentist once you be back.

I agree that it's most likely not an abscess but stranger things have happened.

OP, have you tried flossing the area? Do you floss regularly? If you have food jammed up between your teeth you won't get it all with a toothbrush. I keep dental floss at work so I can clean things out after lunch, otherwise I'll be licking and sucking my teeth for the rest of the day. And sometimes it can get pretty painful if a blackberry seed or little piece of carrot gets stuck up there.

Do not underestimate your gum problems. If you have bleeding gums, bacteria can even enter our heart. Try to floss, and brush your teeth using non sls toothpaste. I don't use toothpaste anymore, I just use botanical oils to clean my mouth since many years. My gums are healthier and stronger than before.

Try seeing a dentist.

Perhaps a periodontist as they specialize in issues of the gingival tissue.

Hi Holytree, i am using an organic oil mixtures, Oral Botanica. I use it also to replace my mouthwash. But flossing is a must! Nothing will work without flossing.
