There's the elephant in the room. Who actually swishes ANYTHING in their mouth for 20 WHOLE MINUTES on a regular basis? Most of my patients don't even brush for the required 2 minutes. 30 seconds, spit, and out the door....and into my office with a toothache.

I can't believe I found this thread - I have been going crazy since I moved trying to find a dentist in FLA who will do a cleaning without xrays and can't find any. They say it's the "law". I don't know if that is accurate or not.

I find yearly xrays a waste of time since I am having no issues with my teeth whatsoever, and I have had cancer and would prefer to not have unneccesary radiation (yeah, I know, it's a "small amount" - why should have a small amount of something harmful, expensive and that I don't need right now?

I will call the dental college, but I am sure they will say the same thing.

Forcing radiation on people to have teeth cleaned should be illegal. If they are worried about liability, patient could sign a disclaimer.

I don't know if xrays are a law and I find that hard to swallow. MOST never question it and it's automatic with dentists for long time, more money for them and more radiation for us. I refuse xrays, sign a waiver with my old dentist and when I stopped going to him called around to find a dentist for cleaning ONLY>.....found one and went to him once for $65. Now I don't to go any dentist as I use homemade coconut oil toothpaste and my teeth are in good condition with my brushings.

Oil pulling can be effective with just 5 minutes or so. I never did it for 20 min. That's a long time.

No cleanings without x-rays? I've never heard of such a thing.

The last time it was even discussed at a visit was when my long-time dentist's sons began practicing with him and "suggested" them. I told them I don't get x-rays and asked the hygienist to make a note of that in my file. It hasn't been brought up since. Friends of mine averse to x-rays also don't get them at their prophylaxis appointments.

There's no "law" requiring x-rays, and people need to be assertive. The day I can't find a dentist that doesn't push routine x-rays is the day I'll stop going to the dentist. I've never had a cavity, and they always tell me my gums are great, so it'll be no skin off my teeth. So to speak.

My insurance requires the exray - before they will approve of any procedures for reimbursement.

I agreed to once a year since my bones that secure the teeth have been weakening.

But is it a law?? Heavens no. It's a mandate though for my insurance coverage. I co pay $10 for a 2$ Cost to dentist. I recall switching dentist and they refused to hand over my file. They said they don't have to ( rather childish). So I said, I paid for every procedure, hand over the file! They magically "misplaced" the pan-dental exray that cost me 90 out of pocket.

Patients need to be upfront on the goal and expectation.

Dentist and jewelers run a 200% markup ...we,the consumer ,willing pay..

Is it a law in Texas that a patient who has a cleaning and dental exam by a Periodontist, Oral surgeon every year and the report is sent to her regular dentist, that this patient has to pay again for an oral exam 6 months later when she goes to her regular dentist for a cleaning. I do not feel I should have to pay twice when I tell them "No" I had a oral evaluation 6 months ago and my teeth are doing ok. They can look at the report they recieved from my specialist and see my teeth are doing o.k. so why are they charging me $58 again for an oral evaluation on my second cleaning in the same year when I tell them "No" but they say I have to.

Follow the Coconut Oil Toothpaste info and one can about blow off dentists. I have not seen a dentist in about 5 yrs and it all started when I woke up to all the xrays pushed on me.

When I still got dental cleaning, I found a dentist here in CA who cleaned my teeth and no xray. But CO toothpaste cleanings are Primo and so far I do very well with no denistry.

Keeping sugars/carbs reduced big time too.

I don't think I've had a cavity/filling in over 20 yrs, can't remember. My young life is another story as I consumed all the fluoridated tap water and ate too much carbs/sugar.

We can keep our teeth and mouth in good health. I've also been taking grape seed extract for 21 yrs soon and know it's high on gum and dental health protection.

Dentists don't want their patients to do what I'm NOW doing. It's amazing how much of our lifetimes we don't QUESTION what we are told needs to be done by these docs/dentists. Thanks to the internet to help wake us up. Question everything.

We are the masters, not sheep as we've been for too many years. I started waking up over 25 yrs ago when I went to the holistic/alternative healing world.

The report they get from the specialist says your teeth were ok 6 months ago. It only takes 9 months for a human being to fully develop all organs and body parts from nothing. Don't you think that a small part of your body such as your mouth/teeth/gums can change in 6 months? Just because something was "doing ok" 6 months ago does not necessarily mean is ok now. If the dentist misses something at your visit, then they are liable. Sounds like your beef is more about money than anything else.

I live on social security and a small retirement income. It is not only about the money but also about the fact a dental evaluation is required only once a year, so why am I required to have one twice a year when my specialist sent a letter stating everything was the same. However, my dentist said it did not matter because it was not done by him. My specialist and dentist refer their patient to each other all the time. It is just that the dentist wants that extra money and it is not about my teeth or he would do more then walk in and open my mouth and walk back out. His oral evauation took less than 2 MINUTES so that is equivalemt to about $1700 per hour. I guess i have lived in a time period where dentists really cared and it wasn't all about the money like it is anymore. Such a sad time in my life!! I would like to be in a world where we have a choice and aren't just told it is this way and you have no choice. They forget, we the people pay the bill.

I would be interested to know what you think is a reasonable price?
