"silver amalgam" fillings contain over 50% elemental mercury and yes it is always breaking down in your mouth. When elemental mercury is oxidized it becomes methyl-mercury which is 100 times more toxic. ANYONE who has 3 or more fillings should be taking selenium supplements everyday. Selenium binds to the mercury and "escorts" it out of the body through urine, sweat and feces.

Mercury poisoning is very prevalent in our society and is also caused by over consumption of tuna, mackerel, orange ruffy and many other large fish. Anyone who has "silver amalgam" fillings should NOT eat fish at all.

Removal is tricky. If proper chelation procedures are followed (selenium, Cilantro, MSM, Garlic) then there shouldn't be a problem other than an occasional crying fit or panic attack.

thanks so much for this info dennis. I will be sure to take my selenium. I think I will work on getting them removed a little at a time--only due to money.

All you hear about these days is lead in kids toys.Dont get me wrong, lead is not good but how could a parent who is so careful about not having lead in kids toys go to the dentist and fill their kids mouths with mercury. Someone needs to put that on the news.

The ADA still insists that Silver Amalgum fillings are ok. BUT! they do not want dentists using them anymore. Read between the lines. They don't want lawsuits.

The ADA was formed in the late 1800s because the original Dental association knew that mercury was bad and wanted to stop using them. A group of immoral dentists got together and formed what is now known as the American Dental Association.

Ever hear of the "Mad Hatter". This term was referring to a hat maker that was mentally ill from constant exposier to the mercury that they used to make the beaver fur lye down flat on the surface of a hat. This method was mad illeagal in the U.S. but China still uses mercury and many other heavy metals and chemicals in order to manufacture cheaply and sell products to Costco, Walmart......ETC.

I am really torn on this issue. On the one hand, I have about 15 "silver" fillings in my mouth, and seemed to have a cavity every time I went to the dentist as a child (stopped getting cavities in college though). My family has bad teeth, and both my parents have upwards of 20 silver fillings that they've had for decades. None of us has ever had any problems from them, and they have been in my mouth for at least 20 years.

On the other hand, I have read extensively about this issue and am concerned. I have read about the removal process, but the thing is, that I have read negative things about the removal process and have read negative things about porcelain fillings too (of which I have a few as well). I have read that porcelain fillings can contain xenoestrogens, which can mimic your body's production of estrogens, which is not good. So it seems like whatever filling material is used--silver or porcelain--is not 100% problem free.

I still have mine, all 20. I just take my Selenium and eat my greens and I don't have symptoms any more. I do miss fish though.

Default heavy metal tests

these tests are not that accurate... since much of the toxins are stored in fat, and elsewhere in the body.
i agree with the rest of the board.. they can be toxic and are banned in many countries.
there is a problem with removal though. many people have gotten sick AFTER removal... the rubber dam will stop some of the heavy metal, but not all... from getting into the system...
you can talk to your dentist or healthcare practitioner about detox programs or about nutritional supplements that may help your body remove the toxins.
either way.. i think you are making the right decision in removing them! make sure you supplement your body once they are out to promote detoxing!

Interesting about the Selenium!!!!!! Saw my dentist, he said not to worry a bit---and that i should worry about stopping smoking more. He said you won't die and that removing them is faqr more dangerous. I started eating fish again--why is fish bad? Even Halibut and salmon?
Makes no snese to me...
"Selenium binds to the mercury and "escorts" it out of the body through urine, sweat and feces."
Now that's good to know about Selenium!

When I had all of mine removed, if I haven't mentioned it I became very ill. I had what my doctor said was chronic fatigue, but I also ached all over. The achy feeling left whenever I laid down, but the moment I became active it came back. It was like having the flu, and at first I thought it was. I began juicing with carrots, parsley, celery, and garlic, and I got better, but I didn't start that until six months later.

Taking selenium in correct dosages is a great idea. I don't know how much of it is toxic, but I read that large doses are. I take a tablet every now and then, maybe 4 times a week--the 200 mcg or mg, whatever it is. So I fear getting more than one removed at a time, but I agree that the dams work to a degee, just that you also breathe the fumes.

Mercury fillings have been banned in English.

Would like to know more about the estrogens in the other type of fillings?

You could get gold fillings. Although the use of gold in dentistry has been declining because it's not as pretty as porcelain, but it's really the best material out there. You may have to search to find a dentist who will still do gold work even though they are all trained to do it, many don't bother because it's not as pretty to advertise as white fillings. With the cost of gold going up, it would probably be expensive too.
