Hello,

On teeth #8, I have an 18 years old ceramic-metal crown which needs to be replaced, it shows black with gum recession.
On teeth #7 and #10 I have filled cavities on side-front.

Now, my dentist is pushing to not only replace the crown on #8, but to build crown on all 4 front :
#7, #8, #9, #10

His argument is that if I change the crown on #8 it will show color difference with #9 and I should place an identical crown on #9 for aesthetic purpose only, no real medical need since the #9 is just fine.
About #7 and #10 , he says that since they already have front fillings and possible make trouble in the future, it's a good idea to crown all four of them.

I'm in doubt and don't really know what to do. I thought about changing one crown with the all-ceramic one and now he is talking about 4 crowns...

I'm 40 years old.

I'll be happy to receive some advice here.

When a dentist builds a crown, he looks at different colors to pick the one which matches your existing teeth.

They just don't come in one color.

If your dentist is incapable of shade selection, you might want to consider going somewhere else.

Is the crown bad (is there decay underneath) or do you want to replace it merely because of the black line that's showing? It sounds to me like your dentist is trying make sure you are happy with your treatment. If you don't want the other crowns, you HAVE THE OPTION to decline them and only go for the one that's bothering you. He's not pushing you in to anything. He's making a recommendation based on his experience.

I don't think you need to see a different dentist. It's merely going to be your decision on whether you want to crown all four so they look similar or not. I can tell you that I have seen patients opt to crown the four front teeth and it looks a MILLION times better than just having the one crown on one front tooth. They can look similar, but because tooth enamel and porcelain aren't the same exact material, you can often tell the difference. But ultimately it's up to you to decide what you want to do.

I agree with your Dentist and previous post. The best option would be to go with all 4 front teeth crowns. One crown on #8 ? No, do not do that, you will not be happy.

Don't do it. Once those teeth are crowned you can never go back. Every 10-15 yrs, maybe 20 at the max you will have to recrown them for the rest of your life. At some point they may fail because of all the work, then you will have to have them pulled and implants or dentures. Also the dentists have a hard time getting your bite back after the first set of crowns. Keep your natural teeth as long as you can.

If you are unsure, what about "easing" yourself into it.

1. Get teeth whitening so that the crown can match a nicer shade.
2. Replace 8 if medically necessary.
3. Take a month or so to decide if you want to change the others.

That's what I would probably do anyways.
