I tried the MA forum and had no luck so figured here may be a better bet. In particular I'm looking for a dentist that uses anesthesia that puts you out completely as I can just not take the pain!
I'm talking Office Based Intravenous Anesthesia with Local Anesthetic or Hospital/Surgery Center Based General Anesthesia. In other words anesthesia that puts you COMPLETELY OUT for the procedure.
Really, the painless aspect is the most important factor. Of course quality of work and reasonable pricing are very important as well, but I'm more concerned about the pain more than anything. Maybe, I'm just a wuss, but I've been in a dentist's chair for 15 hours one week before and I can just not live through that kind of pain again.
As far as the work needed done I think I probably need root canals, basic cavities and maybe even some implants. They've gotten pretty bad unfortunately and please don't post just to harp on me about them. Trust me they make me feel enough like crap as it is.
I'm south of Boston, but will definitely travel for a dentist that fits the bill.

I have no idea about that place, but I heard that there are lots of good dentists in Massachusetts. They provide a variety of dental services ranging from regular dental treatments to cosmetic dentistry. They also treat patients of all ages.

You could call around to dentists in your area and find out if any of them know of anyone.
As for Tufts Dental School, I don't think you'd like that. I tried it once and you get students working on you, of course. They take HOURS to do anything. My student was not well supervised and didn't know what he was doing. I went back dozens of times and they never did fix the crown, which was what I went in for. They decided another tooth needed work. That tooth then got infected, they had me go to their specialist a few times and finally I gave up and went to a regular dentist. Also, if they mess up, you have already signed your life away so you have no legal recourse.
Harvard Dental school also offers low cost student dental service but I never tried it after the Tufts experience.
I would just call dentists until I found someone who knew of someone.
In NewEngland, your experience at Tufts was not common. You obviously encountered the exception to the rule. Telling the OP he wouldn't like it, based on your unusual experience isn't very helpful. Tufts is a nationally-acclaimed dental school known in part for its superior education and professionally-run dental clinic. Any dentist can screw up. Just like any doctor can screw up. Just like any carpenter, oil-rigger, tree-climber, house-painter, biochemist, high school librarian, etc. etc. etc. You don't need to be in a dental school to experience a failure. Also, Tufts HAS regular dentists working in it. Many of the "students" already have their dental licenses, and are post-doctorate students working toward their specialties.

I know it's top rated. That's why I went there. I also knew that it would take much much longer for the work to be done. But I went anyway. If the OP wants to get this procedure over with and wants to be unconscious, she might do well to call Tufts and ask if they know of a dentist who will do as she wants. Either that or just call around to dentists and ask. But it is very well known that dental work at a dental school takes a long time--what might be accomplished in one or two appointments with a regular dentist might take fifteen or more appointments at a dental school.
Well, for a third "opinion" about Tufts, i think the truth is somewhere between. From what i've heard from old classmates in the Boston area and read, it's basically a crap shoot (kinda like SuperCuts.) I've known happy customers and not so happy customers.
One thing for sure is that a lot of hours are spent waiting and sometimes multiple visits. So think about how much your hours (including travel time, parking and gas) are worth to you vs cost.
Anyways . . . . . I don't even know if the "knock you out." I would think you would need a dental surgeon for that or at least a dentist who works w one.

Do you know for sure you need work done? Have you had a dentist diagnose you and did you like that dentist otherwise?
There are a lot of dentists in MA, but it is very difficult to find a one you can trust IME. So finding "a good one" is they most important thing. A "good one" will be sensitive to your past dental trauma and do their best to make you feel comfortable and feel no pain.
I also have horror stories from MA dentists, from being put in a straight jacket when i was 4 to having multiple fillings (that i question were even needed in the first place) "fail" in less than 3 years.
