Hi all. Today I had a bridge fitted as I had my 2 right teeth missing (the ones next to my front teeth).

A while ago I was in a car crash (not my fault) and smashed them both out and they had to be pulled.

Anyway today I had the bridge fitted and the fit is fine and I've got both my fangs back and a full smile again so that's nice.

But I've noticed I can push air through the gap at the top and sometimes when I'm talking I can feel air going through it which is a weird sensation and sometimes makes a weird lisping sort of sound.

Is there anyway I can plug that with something or is it just a case of having to live with it?

I'll mention it to my dentist when I go again next week as didn't notice until tonight.

Its funny but its like hmmmm I don't really like the sensation and sound it makes.

Can anything be done about that or is it just part of having a bridge?

Like filling it with that denture stuff that holds dentures in place perhaps?

Or is that just what happens when you have a bridge fitted and gotta just get used to it?

Thanks a lot for any help you can give me.

Well, there has to be a gap between the teeth to fit floss into. I suggest giving it a few weeks and see if you get used to it.

The air gap is normal. Everybody sounds a little lispy at first but you learn to adjust your way of speaking so that you sound just like you did before.

To me the weirdest thing about having a permanent bridge was the way it felt to my tongue. Sure, it looks like teeth from the front but they don't bother to pretty up the back of it. My bridge is in the process of coming loose. It happens over time. When it finally comes out, I'll have implants to replace it.

Thanks for your reply. There is no gap between the teeth so it can't be flossed. It's cemented to both sides. It's a bridge not an implant. The gap is at the top where it sits next to my gum.

Oh right. How long have you had it in for then? I wont be able to have implants I don't think as the gum has receded back too much so there isn't much bone to drill into it. I know what you're saying, my tongue is constantly "examining it". I have this big bulbous bit sticking out at the back where as the other side doesn't. Gotta go back next week and going to ask her to file it down for me.

Yeah I guess I will get used to it, just feel so weird and unnatural but I guess its better than having a gap in my teeth and only 1 fang!

Thanks for replies.

The slight gap at the top where the gum is should be flossed. Look for a product called super floss. It has a stiffer end so that you can feed it through and clean the bridge. Also, definitely do not place anything like a denture adhesive in that gap. That would the quickest way to ruin it.

I've had this bridge about fifteen years. I was told it would last about eight, so I guess I got my money's worth.

And that's where the floss goes to floss your gums, not your teeth.
