I need oral surgery to remove several of my teeth. They will be doing the twilight sleep. Anesthesia itself scares me given they don't even know why it works but apart from that just knowing what pain will cause. Anyone done it? I will have several teeth cut out, including one that grew sideways into my jaw.

I've had sedation for wisdom teeth removal, and for endoscopy and colonoscopy. Our son had sedation for his wisdom teeth removal recently.

The dentist should give you pills to take for any post-surgical pain. Dentist should also give you a sheet with post-surgical instructions to follow. Be sure to bring someone with you to drive you home after the procedure.

You may need to eat soft foods for a few days.

This site has two pages of info, and questions to ask your dentist.

Come back here after the procedure and let us know how it went.

Anesthesia is a lot of fun! Don't worry.

You're lucky.

The last time I had oral surgery, I was awake. Local anesthesia. It was a long procedure and I was bored out of my mind. DH, who was there as moral support, slept through most of it. Some moral support!

Is the sideways tooth abscessed or otherwise causing problems for other healthy teeth? If not, maybe you don't even need it removed. It sounds like that one will be the more difficult one, assuming the other ones are fairly normal erupted teeth. I've had a number of adult teeth pulled as a child and several wisdom teeth as an adult, and never had general anesthesia. The dentist gave me Valium to take the night before and again before the surgery and it was over pretty quickly. I also have very high anxiety about general anesthesia.

They said it was impacted and would cause issues. Also, several of my teeth are badly broken or otherwise misshapen.

Is the impacted tooth causing issues now? Sometimes they do but other times they don't. It may be worth getting a 2nd opinion anyway, and if it isn't causing issues now you can consider it optional surgery. I am not a dentist, but I had an impacted wisdom tooth for many years that finally started growing into my mouth when the adjcent tooth cracked and was removed. Mine was not sideways, but it was and is still a bit crooked. But it functions fine and I wouldn't have a molar on that side without it.

Anyway if the other teeth are already in your mouth they should be able to remove them without GA if you don't want GA. That should be your choice.

I recently had a medical procedure that required anesthesia. I was afraid also. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was put under, and how little effects I had following the procedure from the anesthetic. Previously I'd had a procedure and the anesthetic made me feel hurt and ill for nearly a week.

I am hoping it helps you to know that there are many new anesthetics that are not as frightening these days.

I hope that your procedure goes well. The only dental procedures that I've had that involved anesthetic didn't cause any problems. The only concerns were following all the recommended things to prevent "dry socket" after a tooth extraction. This is a very important issue.
I hope these links help.
What Is Dry Socket? Symptoms and Treatment
Healing after Extractions and Preventing Dry Socket
3 Ways to Prevent Dry Socket After a Tooth Extraction - wikiHow
Self-management - Dry socket - Mayo Clinic

ETA:I know you are worried. But, I would suggest that you read some of the links that I posted in my previous post. The 2nd link is called Dental Fear Central, it will likely have some information that will help you with your fears.
