You should pay for an appointment you missed, it's your responsibility not theirs. What happens if you forget to go to work, does your boss pay you anyway? My dentist doesn't keep available spots for emergencies, dentists operate on a low margin and can't afford to have the chair idol for a few hours every day in case there is an emergency.
edit: ugh "idle" not idol" I was looking at the TV online guide and saw American Idol listed
My dentist is amazing and I am very thankful for him. Not every dentist is out to scam you, goodness.
And he is always booked, but will bend over backwards for his patients when they have an emergency. Crazy how much easier life is when you have a regular dentist and have built a relationship with them.
And for appointments: A calendar.
I have an appointment with a gastro specialist and they are booked months in advance. My appointment is 5 months out. I put it in my calendar and requested it off work that day. Pretty simple.

THIS is an aspect so many people forget about. Someone you work with over time is going to know your concerns, preferences, any complications or sensitivities you've had in the past, is more likely to do things in stages, be more flexible with the finances, even tolerate your attitude. If you go to someone intermittently or keep shopping "new" ones they have fewer incentives to build any sort of relationship with you. If you only go when you are in big trouble the chance that it could have been dealt with much more simply and cheaply is long gone. You have no one other than yourself to blame but where's the judgmental satisfaction in that?

On the contrary - dentists love people like you guys because you never show up, thus allowing us to focus our time and efforts on people who actually appreciate our services. On the rare times that you actually darken our doorstep, we (and our staff) also love it when you leave pissed off because we know there's a 99% chance that you'll never come back and you'll become some other dentist's problem the next time you have a toothache. Regardless, we always have a nice "Thank you for your patronage, but as of this date we will no longer be able provide dental care for you" letter ready to go, usually in the mail by the time you get back in your car.
Many times the biggest dental bashers also seem to overestimate their value to a practice - like we are that hard up for patients that we jump for joy when we see their name on the schedule. They complain how much they don't want to see the dentist. News flash - the dentist doesn't want to see you either. I'd rather watch paint dry for an hour than deal with some these people.

But somehow you take me when I call. If you don't want to take me - please don't - there must be 500+ dentists in my area alone.
But the more I deal with dentists the more I see their services are not really required at all.
My brother has never been back to the dentist in 30 years. Modern dentistry is optional they just have everyone convinced you need to go every 3 months.
I guess if someone is meticulous about brushing, flossing and using a water pik they may not need to go every year but I can't imagine going 30 years without seeing a dentist. I would love to know what your brother's smile looks like. I notice people's teeth pretty quickly like some people notice eyes, noses or whatever right away.
Unfortunately no matter how much I brush & floss I develop tarter in certain areas very easily and also have some areas of receding gums. I usually go twice a year for cleanings to keep it under control so I don't lose any teeth because in my case since I don't have dental insurance I feel an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
