I had a deep cleaning of just 1 tooth about a year ago -- that tooth had suddenly given me a horrendous toothache (and I had not had a toothache in literally 30+ years so it was bad!). The hygienist, whom I loved, did a great job -- between the cleaning and the antibiotics, by THE NEXT DAY I was looking normal again (before then, my left cheek looked like I was a chipmunk but only on one side!).

Anyway, I wish you continued good dental health.
Do you have to take antibiotics?

Pretty much, YES. It was a pretty severe infection of that one tooth (my left cheek swelled to about the size of a baseball ). I very rarely take antibiotics, but in this case they were warranted and I am lucky in that a very basic first-attempt antibiotic (amoxicillin, in this case) worked perfectly -- my face was basically back to normal by the next day (but of course I finished the whole course of antibiotics). So yes, when they are NEEDED and prescribed accurately, antibiotics can work great -- as they did for me.
