I thought that I had a filling fall out. But my dentist says it is a hole caused by decay. I am not really on board with that because I have had a lot of fillings back there and my tooth doesn't hurt but... she says my only option is a root canal. I have an appointment on Tuesday. But I have misgivings.
One the one hand:
I just can't get her to explain to me why I need one in a way that I understand. I can't see any significant decay on the X-rays and I don't have any pain. Why can't we just do a filling or a crown?
On the other:
for the past 5 years every dentist I go to says I need one in that tooth. So at this point I am just getting fed up and ready to do whatever.
On the other:
The last time I was told I needed a root canal in that tooth I got a second opinion. The dentist had told me I had an infection. The second opinion told me he was wrong and sent me to get a cavity filled.
I feel like I am having my hand forced because I have a tooth with a large hole in it that the dentist did nothing with and now I have to do something to close it up. Even if that is a root canal.
I would ask here these questions but I have lost faith in her. I am hoping the doctor I see to do the root canal can tell me.
If you've been told by multiple dentists for the last 5 years that you need a root canal, I would believe the various dentists unless you think they are in cahoots with each other? But that's probably not the case.

Some things are predictable. This dentists predicts you will have pain due to a cavity close to the nerve of a tooth. This is treated by removing the nerve, also known as a root canal. You have the option of waiting until it causes pain. This generally happens on a Friday night when no dentist is open. Letting the decay run it's course until you have pain will also risk having enough damage to the tooth that it's not fixable and has to be just removed. The problem is that pain doesn't develop until it's too late. Just because there is no pain, doesn't mean nothing is wrong. Same reason people have heart attacks....because high blood pressure doesn't cause pain. Until it's too late.

Yes I have had one before and that was the worst part. Though the "bib" they gave me helped. This time the tooth is the final molar so I am not sure if that will make things difficult. The last one was the second to last molar.

I personally wouldn't wait till I was in pain. The pain caused from an abscessed tooth is probably the worst pain I have ever felt.
Make sure to see an endodontist. A good dentist wont do a root canal on molar, they will refer you out. The specialist I went to was amazing. Quick, precise, painless. I'd rather have a root canal than a filling.

Of course prior in 2016 I had a dentist tell me this tooth was infected and I would have to get a root canal. I asked for my x-ray which he was slow in getting me and I went to a root canal specialist and they said, no you don't have an infection go see this doctor for a filling. I did. So yes it seems insane to me that this is not a filling come loose.
Also, this current dentist refused to do anything about the tooth. Even a stop gap measure to keep food out of there. That says to me she wants me to have a "sophie's choice" -- where I have to "do something" so why not a root canal? And she added I had to do it sooner rather than later. Also the fact that she won't simply tell me why exactly I need to do a root canal has me suspicious. The last time I had one the dentist explained to me I had no tooth there any longer to do a filling but this dentist keeps saying that I need a root canal because of "decay" -- and I feel like I can't get a straight answer out of her. I feel like she feels like I should just do whatever she says.
I decided to get a second opinion. I have an appointment with another dentist next Thursday. This dentist is one of the best in the city and has super modern equipment. If they say I need it I will have it done immediately. They have enough modern equipment that if it needs to be done I trust it won't be the nightmare of subsequent visits that I normally get to deal with. If they say I need it I will have to done as soon as possible.
just go and visit your dentist on Tuesday, if you think going with root canal is great then go with that. but in my opinion root canal is better because if your tooth get infected, you can experience pain, swelling and even total tooth loss unless treated. so its better not to wait for that thing. On other hand
