My dental insurance w/Cigna won't cover porcelain crowns, only metal ones. I don't know anyone who gets metal crowns anymore and I wasn't offered the option of this, anyway. Has anyone else heard of insurance not covering porcelain crowns?

No, but we have Delta Dental, and fortunately my wife and I each have it through our employers and cover each other so we get double the normal coverage amount.

Cigna has about 5-6 different dental plans, it could be that yours is one that has less benefits at a lower premium cost.

This is very common. Most insurance companies only cover porcelain if it's a front tooth. Funny how insurance premiums keep rising but coverage gets worse.

Talk to your dentist. Most likely they will do a porcelain crown, you will have to pay the difference between that and the cost of the metal one.

Porcelain is more expensive. This is why your insurance doesn't cover it. This was in the paperwork you signed and agreed to this.

My insurance company would only pay for a PFM crown but my dentist fabricated a zirconium crown in his office and accepted what the insurance company paid. He said it's easier for him to do that than to have a lab to fabricate a PFM crown. He's the 2nd dentist I've been to who did this.

I have several gold crowns in my back molars. They are fine. I'm sure insurance won't cover gold, but I see no problem with metal crowns.

I think this was pretty standard in the years I had dental insurance form my employer. Porcelain was covered only for front teeth.
