Hi, I’m 65 and will be getting dentures. I’m retired and have decided to wait for my gums to heal before getting permanent dentures. You opinion would be appreciated. Thank you Roy.

You just going to eat soup or baby food until your gums are healed? Walk around without teeth? What is the upside of waiting? I imagine that most people do fine with immediate dentures. But hey... whatever works for you, it’s your mouth.

The dentures fit much better with less pain. That's the upside.

It took 2 weeks and I stayed home. I had immediate dentures made but too painful to wear them.

Many people want immediate ones so they have teeth, but if you're comfortable waiting I don't see the issue. I think waiting and letting the gums heal is the better choice anyway

My mother got dentures at 49 and had trouble with them the rest of her life (died at 90). The real problem was that she resisted going in for any adjustments. I am 73 and so far have my own teeth (one implant and many fillings though) The few people I know needed time for their gums to heal before they could wear their dentures. When I see older people now with straight bright white teeth I imagine that they are fake.

Dentures need adjustment from time to time as your gums will change. Not fun, but the way it is.

My dentist told me about a client he had who waited for his gums to heal after removal- he got a temporary set of dentures that were mostly cosmetic during the interim. It must have been a tough time eating only soft foods but once the permanent dentures were installed he said they changed his life- in a good way.

My wife has done a good job of feeding me for 61 years. I am mid way through going to full dentures from the partials that I have had for a few years. In the meantime she doesn't know whether to feed me baby food or Alpo.
