Would it be possible to get him to talk to a prosthodontist? There might be other options aside from full dentures. If he has some teeth that are stable they might be used to anchor the dentures, or unless it's cost prohibitive - he might consider having a procedure where bridges are anchored by implants. My parents had dentures before they were 50 and they struggled with them for as long as I can remember, watching them made me determined that I wouldn't end up with dentures and at 75 I still have my own teeth

I also wonder about a bridge. I don't understand why he is going straight to dentures instead of bridges. Could be none of his teeth are good.

His sound like neglect for sure unlike mine which are genetic.

You're very lucky you have good teeth. Your parents didn't see a dentist until they were older most likely. My dad didn't either but he had perfect teeth until they pulled them at 67, seems like it snow balled after being diabetic.
