How does mouth wash give temporary relief from tooth pain?
Thanks.
We could ask Google but the purpose, as we know it, of a question is to hopefully start a conversation where multiple people can give their experiences.
Myself and another person standing in line for dental services. He had Listerine and held a small amount in in the painful area. Once the pain was relieved the mouthwash went back into the cup. It works for me with Colgate and I've used it for tooth pain before. The stinging of mouthwash may in some way de-sensitize the pain. Anyone who might develop toothache before a weekend and can't get a dental appointment until Monday could try mouth wash. Or any other remedy mentioned on this thread or on this forum.
Dentist we know the results. This one tooth is the only anchor for a customized dental plate. To remove the tooth would cause the plate to lose 50% of its anchor. That might require one implant to replace the extracted tooth. It's very questionable if the implant could be made to be the perfect fit for the denture. This tooth is unstable in some way. Yesterday there was pain in the morning and then no pain for 6-7 hours even with cold liquids and chewing. It's not 100% to be extracted today but it's day by day.
It might be that the alcohol in the mouthwash is numbing the area.
I do know that Jack Daniels whiskey, taken orally, usually works for me...a few shots spaced over ten minutes usually makes me forget about any tooth pain that I might have been feeling.
Of course, I don't spit out the whiskey between shots....

As in, you still have the toothache, but you don't care?.
Don't know about mouthwash, but I've found a dab of Oragel helps sometimes.
