antibiotics stop the immediate infection and pain but they don't cure the cause of the abscess. I had a tooth that my dentist told me needed a root canal but it started hurting really bad right before a scheduled flight to London, I called my dentist & he prescribed an antibiotic, it stopped the pain but I still needed the root canal and had it done when I returned home.
The first response you received was absolutely the best one. Tell your dentist the problems with the insurance - they have to work around these problems all the time and will be able to find a solution, perhaps something like the first responder has suggested.
To delay something like this that has already been causing you pain is dangerous. The infection is still there and can cause problems other than in your teeth. Did you know dental infections can actually affect your heart? Don't play money games with your health. The dentist will be able to keep you safe and still work within your insurance boundaries.
You could price shop for a dentist that will do it for less money. I had a similar experience and they told me I should not be walking around with an infection in my mouth for very long. The antibiotic helps it, but the problem is still there.
